Hi gailfaith -- Thank you for pointing out to me how blessed I am with my knee replacement! I have some very minor concerns, and to put it in perspective, my concern about the scar is minor, too. My knee is coming along as expected for 8 weeks post-op, and in general, I'm doing very well. My range of motion is 107, and I'm working hard to increase that number. Thanks very much for your reply!

Hello @gmajen61, I would like to add my welcome to everyone else who has greeted you. If I remember correctly, the ends of the scar (top & bottom) were where I experienced the most discomfort. I was told to gently massage the scar with a fingertip to slowly decrease the sensitivity. Eventually, as with the knee, the pain will decrease and eventually disappear all together. I am 11 years out from my TKR, and the only thing that is weird with the scar and top of my knee is that I still have "dead spots" where I can't feel anything. It's more annoying than anything.

107 degrees 8 weeks out is great progress. I only made it 110 degrees in total, so keep pushing!

I had TKR 18 months ago and the other 6 months ago. I still have pain and sensitivity in my scar and the area around is numb. I think some of that will last for a long time. After both replacements had bad pain in my back hip area. Never had that before. I did get an injection for pain in my SI joint which helped some. For people with swelling an pain in knee I did PT with deep tissue massage and then pool work which greatly reduced the swelling.

i did the pool therapy and each time my knee swelled up. Finally just sucked it up and went about my business and try to ignore the pain. Swore i would not do it again and found out about stem cells.Costly but i have my life back.

Wow,tell me more...had bad was your knee.I'm confused how can stem cell therapy work after you had a replacement?

Sorry. The second knee had stem cells. I told myself I would not go through TKR again. What I have found out is the surgeons say stem cells does not work. Don't blame them. Have to eat etc.

I recently learned of Mayo Clinic's Regenerative Medicine Consult Service. You can find it here, http://mayocl.in/1Ag7duN. This consult service will offer information on stem cell therapy, whether you qualify for Mayo Clinic or not. "Mayo Clinic provides educational guidance and appropriate referrals to research studies and clinical trials in stem cell therapies."

It might be worth your time to call and ask about legitimate centers that offer stem cell treatment, even if you do not intend on trying to come to Mayo Clinic. I hope this helps cut through the noise a little bit, as there are many centers promising miracle results.

@winning, did the surgeons tell you that stem cells don't work after they gave them to you?

yes, they gave me the odds. Friend had his hip done and they told him 50-50. The success rates are also listed on the regenexx web site. Have friends who have not had it work and some many who have had it work. I also see many sites opening up in our area and i tell people to be careful. A chiropractor opened an off for stem cells. Not sure of that. Prices vary also. I feel its up to the individual to make the decision. I did not want to go through tkr again so it was an easy decision. So far, so good.

To all recipients of stem cells: I'd like to know TOO MUCH INFO re stem cells? Where did they get cells from? Who did it - full name? and city?
How much $? After u got cells - how long b4 u were doing all normal activities? How many shots? Heard of Dr. that gives prp, then cells, then maybe more cells in 6 - 10 days. How does that sound to u? Marian

The stem cells came from my hip. They took a drill and pull stem cells from hip and then mixed them with my blood. That took 3 hours. Then it was injected into my knee. Cost was $7000. Nancy Lopez, the pro golfer had hers done right before me. It took her 10 days to recover as she said that in her press conference. She went back to golf. My pain let up in 13 days. Had it done in the winter. Was riding an airdyne in 3 weeks. No hospital stay, no pain. Dr Roger J, Kruse at Wildwood hospital in Toledo.
I also had my back done, L4, L5 rubbing on nerve. Cost $1200. Laid around 2-4 weeks and had no pain. The exercise and stretching i do every day is what helps it. Same hospital. My friends have had 2 surgeries with no help. Pick your poison.
I have had no more shots. I do know this. With what i went through in TKR i will not do it again. By the way the knee brace they give you is great. I have heard it called a stem cell brace. I will wear it when i play golf and if i plan to bike long distance. They did advise me to quti tennis but i do have several friends who returned to tennis. Probably my age which is in upper 70's, but feel like 50. I have lost 10 pounds in last month and drs have said for each pound you lose its like losing 5 pounds on the knee. Any questions? Just played golf tody and finished a 10 mile bike ride and i have the old fashion bike. Good luck.

@cobweb Do you know if Medicare pays for this type of treatment? I googled the doctor you mention and he is a family practicioner and regenerative medicine doctor, so I assume this procedure is not done by ortho doctors. It sure would be wonderful to get relief knee relief without having to endure surgery. My right knee has already been replaced but it still hurts now, four years after replacement.
Who advised you to go see someone about this type of treatment, I doubt your ortho surgeon.
