Biotin, Hair loss, Thyroid and Multivitamins
There has been discussions in this group about Biotin, hair loss and effect on thyroid lab tests. I have ignored because I do not take a Biotin supplement. I just realized that that my Multivitamin contains Biotin.
So, if you're taking a multivitamin and are being tested for thyroid levels, be aware that it may affect the result of lab results. There is a simple solution, if your multivitamin contains Biotin, stop taking for few days prior to blood work.

I think biotin has been implicated in interfering with levothyroxine metabolism. I have been counseled to not take it within 4 hours of thyroid med. Alot of medications interfere with thyroid medication so I take my levothyroxine at 2:00a.m. Yes! It’s worth it my levels have been stable for months as well as having great nails and little hair loss.

2 ReactionsJust take the MVI at a different time …food and many meds interfere with absorption of thyroid medication.
The reason the blood work shows a change is that you have been taking the MVI too close to taking your thyroid medication. Stopping it a few days before the blood test is effecting a false result.
You don’t take any calcium for the bones? The bone damage on Al’s is proven. My thyroid is stable now but I don’t want to go bald. I’m trying to find a safe shampoo if I can’t take biotin. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hope your getting up at 2 am just for levothyroxine. I take mine when wake up and then take my iron pill in afternoon because iron pill interferes with levothyroxine.
I used Mill Creek biotin shampoo and it literally thickened my fine hair. You can buy it on Amazon or GNC used to carry it.

5 ReactionsI am on thyroid medication . I take it as soon as I wake- and don’t take any supplements until lunch. I was also told to wait 4 hrs for any supplements. I only take calcium and D - was advised to do)my oncologist team is not big on supplements and think you should be able to get all by eating)Which I think is impossible.
Completely agree…also the 4 hour window is what I have been told and is why I wait ‘til 2a.m just in case I had a late night snack at 10. I have difficulty waiting the hour after early morning coffee. So that is another reason why I don’t do the 2 a.m. dosing.
I wake briefly at 2a.m, and go right back to sleep.
My sister follows the same protocol.
Laurie--- I take both a thyroid med. & Biotin. One in AM & the other at night. Before blood work, I stop Biotin
for a few days, Dr.'s orders. My hair & nails are fine, though it took about 4 or so months to notice growth,
When I lost my hair due to breast cancer chemo and it started coming back in, I bought some Alra conditioning shampoo on Amazon. It doesn't list biotin in the ingredients. . It "soothes sensitive scalps, increases scalp circulation and revives lifeless hair. " I have really hard well water where I live and it cleans my hair nicely.
Stopping the biotin just a few days before the test gives a false reading. The biotin actually interferes with the absorption all month of the thyroid medication. Best to separate the times you take the biotin from the thyroid med by a good 4 hours. Take the biotin at bed time thyroid medication in a.m.
