Struggling with Tymlos medicine

Posted by darla1 @darla1, Sep 1, 2023

Hello, I’m turning 55 this November , was diagnosed with late stage osteoporosis, started Tymlos 2 weeks ago, with immediate side effects from the very first dose. My dr has had me start with 80, 8 clicks. I’m 105 lb soak and wet. My bones hurt before I began Tymlos, now the pain has become excruciating in my bones, muscle weakness, heat palpitations after each dose, headaches that never go away, and change in my mental health.
I see my Dr for the first time since beginning Tymlos next week. Which I will discuss the issues I’m having.
Has anyone made it through the 2 years? Did the drug improve their bone density? I guess what I’m asking ,
Is this worth what I’m putting myself through mind, body, and soul?

Thanks to @windyshores I learned that you could start at a low dose and work your way up. I did 3 clicks for three days, just to let my body "get to know" the medication, and went up a click every five days.
I couldn't get past six clicks. Two times I tried 7 clicks, and I got palpitations, tachycardia, leg cramps, and terrible headaches, so I had to skip a day, go back to five, and then back to six.
After eight months, I had a DEXA and found that my T-scores had improved, even at a lower dose (60 mcg.)

@mmodestti that's great that you had gains with 60mcg. I hope you will keep trying to get to 70mcg. I actually varied my dose depending on what I had to do that day! I even did 80mcg sometimes 🙂 If you do 7 for a few days- more than 2- the side effects might ease. If not, then you will know!

That is awesome, @windyshores!
I had to take a break because my doctor finished her fellowship program and left the clinic, Took me a while to find her. We had to start the paperwork with the medical insurance and it was a bit of a hassle, but I am back in treatment. 🙏🏼
I am again working my way up the dose, and will definitely try to get to 70 mcg. at least a few days of the week.
Thank you for always sharing your suprr helpful insights and advice. Cheers!

@darla1 I had a preexisting issue with atrial fibrillation and felt that the fast heartbeat after Tymlos may have triggered an episode. A couple of years later, I am not so sure. No proof anyway.

Hi-
How do you get the dose down? I've been prescribed Tymlos for severe osteoporosis but was told there's no way to lower the dose. I'm chemically sensitive and small and thin at 94 pounds.

@curious6 the pen has "clicks," Eight clicks is a full dose. Just do tow, or four, to start and then move up. The doctors don't seem to know this type of thing (about the pens). My doc approves of this approach.

Thanks ! So the unused extra medicine stays in the pen and you just turn the knob to get to the next dose to the following day?

@curious6 when you see the pen, you will understand. You set a dose each time. There are 30 full doses in the pen. Prime it first- instructions are provided.

Thank you ! I’m going to check with my doctor tomorrow. My plan would be to start at one click for a week and then go to two clicks the next week if I can tolerate it. And go up as the weeks go by if I get used to it.

Sorry but one click isn't really any medicine. I would start with two and would not expect even sensitive people to react to two, though maybe there are exceptions. I am extremely sensitive to medications and also have afib and lupus. I don't think you need to be too afraid but your feelings are your feelings. One click is fine but might be a waste of time! Try to get up to 4-6 clicks as soon as you can. If you have side effects, they will ease in time. Many of us have side effects that are very tolerable and they go away in an hour or two, unlike some other meds. It will be fine!
