Fluoroquinolone toxicity

Posted by cbsolomon @cbsolomon, Sep 11, 2021

Did anyone on this forum take cipro levaquin or avelox around the time their neuropathy began. If so, you probably suffered an adverse reaction to the drug. These fluoroquinolone antibiotics are well know for causing bad neuropathies, tendon damage and psychiatric issues. Check your medical records.

My husband was prescribed Cipro for a presumed UTI by an oncall doctor he'd never seen. He snapped his Achilles tendon some time later and because he was 80 something (my husband not the Ortho) the Ortho would not do surgery. It has had such a negative effect on his life. Subsequent urologists have questioned that use of Cipro and Orthos have said he should have had surgery. He now has Cipro listed as "allergy" in his medication list. I won't take it either.

I took Levofloxacin in June of last year for C-diff, and was prescribed it again after surgery in December. It has caused several things, the most catastrophic was bilateral Achilles tendon ruptures, which the orthopedist hoped would heal, but still hasn't after 3 months. We're working toward surgery now. Other things that have happened are depression, suicidal thoughts, bicep tendonosis, clumsiness walking (requires a walker), finger tendon pain, knee weakness, DVT, and who knows what will happen next. Levofloxacin is in the same family as Cipro. I should not have been given it because I take Prednisone, had steroid injection in my ankle just before surgery, I'm 73, and low BMI. Plus I take 3 other medications that can interact with Fluoroquinolones. This is messing with my life!

Even though a person doesn't react after 1 or 2+ Fluoroquinolones, they're cumulative, so each time, the risk increases.

@mlmal I hope you recover from the side effects. Unfortunately, for many people, things can happen a year after taking it, and some deal with it the rest of their lives. I hope you and I don't fall into that category!!

Jim - On my prior post, I believe that is what took place with me given 2 same antibiotics about 18 months apart. I wanted to mention that some docs will prescribe other antibiotics, use with caution if never taken before. All of my medical charts NOW show my allergy to Augmentin and Avelox. One of them sent me to the emergency room 10 miles from my house. It hit me within 5 minutes after taking it. I had what doctors called a full-blown out allergic reaction, could not breath and so on. I might not be here today if I lived 25 miles from the hospital. No urgent care centers open. First time for an antibiotic, be with someone just in case, I could not have driven myself and my wife knew exactly what to do, she recognized the problem. Ed

I am currently poisoned 6 years from cipro. Additionally, I was poisoned in 1990 and sick for 9 years. For whatever miracle, after 9 years it mostly went away. During that time, I went to Mayo clinic. They didn't have a clue and how to diagnose me. And it's mind-blowing that 31 years later they still can't diagnose it. It's really sad. And Mayo clinic is not alone. Virtually every doctor I see doesn't believe me and or knows nothing about the florouquinolone poisoning

Have you looked up regenerativemedicinela.com ?
Also there is a doctor on YouTube called Dr Ghalili. He has a video or two. There are other vidoes that are supportive also. Locally is a problem though. I have not found anyone either. So I may go to CA.
I took Levofloxacin over 8 months ago. Neuropathy, achy joint pains in my whole upper body starting in the middle of my back, arms ache & feel heavy, tendons popping, worse in my right hand. I didn't even take the full course due to bad side effects including hallucinations early in morning, heart pain, etc... Fainting spell sometime right after. Now I am having heart problems/fainting spells, & the normal heart tests say I am fine. Doctors have no clue & one said I was being "emotional."
Ask God to help you too. He has gotten my through some bad spells, especially with my heart. I know that at least He believes me even though the docs do not.
I pray you find answers for yourself. It's actually a disability too. There have been suites against the company. They should all be banned!!!

Unfortunately I went down that rabbit hole twice with Levoquin and once with Cipro. Keep in mind the Flourines in cells can be set off even years after. NSAIDS caused my worse symptoms to occur. But I was also having sudden tearing first my shoulder tore then my bicep then my meniscus ripped. Plenty of other annoying symptoms. Currently working g to detox as much as possible. Good Luck

I should not have been given it either. I am over 60. Aside from initial neurpathy, tendon problems; over 6 months later I am having heart trouble, pain and dizzy, weak spells. Never had before I took Levofloxacin. Have you looked up regenerative medicine.com or Dr Ghalili on YouTube?

No one told me! My muscles in the backs hurt so bad, and my hips I take five Tylenol in the morning and five at night because of the pain I don’t know what else to do for the pain. How long does it take for this to get out of your system?

I am on a very strict low-inflammation diet and it helped me before with other pain/inflammation problems. But after Levofloxacin, I found that I had to be even stricter. Fat, especially animal, just seems to flare the pain really bad. So now I only have dairy sparingly a few times a week. Vegan works the best. I get that low back hip pain/stiffness too and it wakes me up at times. Stretching & walking, even in the middle of the night, helps. Drink lots of water too, even before bed. Make your evening meal just a lite one with salad or other raw vegetables and only protien, no dry food like grain. (your body dehydrates at night, and can bring on pain or breathing problems) You should at sleep some better & maybe not so much pain.

So far my foremost weapon has been 500 mg magnesium. Plus magnesium bath flakes from Ancient Harvest plus a oil spray on from said company both on Amazon. Plus clean diet. Plus Shilajit dry drops along with boron from Mother Earth minerals. NAD powder from Mito Life plus Purely K super strength from Mito Life. My goal is to remove these flourines from my cells. Everything seems to start up the symptoms of floxing. (Such as NSAIDS cortisone creams etc etc) even sometimes just not eating perfectly. Keep in mind to start the detoxing process with only one of the supplements I mentioned. Each arr very strong remedies in accomplishing this. So add one after the other and watch and see and feel the difference. The Mag oil and flakes I do as much as possible. The oil spray will stay on 20 minutes then Rinse in shower. If working you will feel itchy till it is rinsed. I have some other weapons I will start when I can afford to add to my arsenal. It seems the floxing can work it’s way into other symptoms throughout your system. Right now they are attacking my heal of my left foot with extreme pain. Dr. Showed me some exercises to help. Plantar fasciitis which in all my born days has NEVER been an issue till one am I woke up to pain and suffering. Many of the other problems I was having are absolutely better!!!

2016, 19 & 20 @ about 64, I had high dose IV infusions of Cipro & Flagyl for diverticulitis, ruptured colon, reconstructive surgery. Since that time my legs have been problematic. finally acute bilateral Achilles tendinitis diagnosed. since then I have pain & contraction behind each knee of biceps femoris bilaterally. Suddenly both shoulders are painful & restricted range of motion. Just diagnosed with acute bilateral radiculopathy of L5. Can this toxicity cause ongoing degenerative changes over time like this? I know I’m aging but physiologically I am, or was, 10 years younger & never had issues limiting my mobility until sudden onset post fluoroquinolone IVs, then gradual but continual neuromuscular & tendon degeneration. Though ortho did reveal cause of my Achilles tendinitis as fluoroquinolone toxicity 3-4 yrs ago, no one else will discuss the possibility that this is now diffuse & ongoing affecting more than just my Achilles.
