I have osteoporosis and I've been taking alendronate for four years. I have a stress fracture at the base of the second metatarsal. It's been a year since it occurred and it's not healing. Officially, it's been diagnosed as a non-union fracture. I talked to my podiatrist about why my fracture isn't healing. He said it's likely a combination of osteoporosis, my age (I'm 71), and alendronate. I'm now on a bone growth stimulator (week 7). I guess I'll know if it's working in a few more months but I don't feel or see a change in my foot.

Thanks @mev123 for your comment. What is a bone growth stimulator? Does it shake your foot?

@mev123, Did you wear a boot when you first hurt your metatarsal? I didn't because the podiatrist didn't know if I had a stress fracture or a neuroma, because it didn't show on the xray. I asked for an MRI but that took 4 weeks to get results after waiting for an appointment. Now that my foot isn't healing, the podiatrist wants me to wear a boot. The problem is the weight of the boot on my metatarsal makes it hurt. I am 73, petite and on Tymlos. The only thing the podiatrist said when I asked why this bone wasn't healing like the others, was that it is weight bearing. Have you been walking on your foot all this time? I was thinking about one of those knee scooters.
