I just read your essay and identify with it for several reasons: I am now 87, my husband is gone, and I am a retired teacher! I had a stroke a year ago; survived and now live alone, with help of a daughter and son-in-law. I can no longer drive: my choice since my right foot and hand are not quite normal. Since I live in a very rural part of the Ozarks (and love it here!), I am alone most of the time. I spend my time reading, doing puzzles, staying in contact online, taking care of myself and my home.
As you said, I can still make my own decisions with my doctor's help. I consider myself lucky to still be able to live in my own home.I feel gratitude is an important feeling for me!

Yes it is. I have found that gratitude is also important to give to others when they support and help you. I was always proud of my independence. Even though I am still independent, there are times when I ask for help. I have found that when you just smile and say thank you, it opens a lot of doors and makes one feel very good.

My dad grew up in Berryville Ark, beautiful area. He retired in Bella Vista Ark.
