Neuropathy: Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

Posted by sjhedcon @sjhedcon, Mar 21, 2020

I have loss of feeling in my feet and tingling sensation. My doctor prescribed gabapentin. I read the side effects and decided not to take this med.
Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

I have small fiber neuropathy and CIDP. I have taken Gabapentin for over 4 years with great success. I have debilitating nerve pain most at night in my legs. I take 2400 mg which is a fairly large dose. It works very quickly and effectively with zero side effects. Judging from other comments, I consider myself fortunate!

I have been on GABA for many years, 800 mg four times a day for peripheral neuropathy on the top of my feet. I'm not sure that it helps me at all. Frankincense and Myrrh works but does not last very long. My primary care physician recommended that I try THC. It does allow me to sleep, but the effect on my neuropathy is hard to gauge. The tincture seems to be the best the dosage is difficult to determine.

Thank you, Chris. I did try the cannibus, but found, after trying several dosages, that it was either not enough or too much. I was out of it and didn’t like that feeling. I do hope you have found the comfort needed to go about your daily tasks.

Good evening @vvvalsigkap .....I think I understand your issue. Regular medications that are in capsules don't require you to figure out how much tincture you place in the dropper. Yes, using medical cannabis can require more effort to make sure you have the proper dosage. What I like about medical cannabis is that I can adjust my dosage based on my pain level as well as my activity. I hope you find the perfect solution so you have joy in your life every day.

The side effects made this drug not one I could take. I am very sensitive to almost all medications. I hope it works for you!

I've been taking it for quite a while. The burning at night has been cut down. I have no side effects taking it.

That’s great!! I’m so happy that it is working for you. Ive always found it strange how we all react differently to different medications.

I have had severe pain and other symptoms from small fiber neuropathy for 12 years. Fortunately for me, Dr. Anne Oaklander at Mass General performed my initial evaluation and prescribed gabapentin, which has been a lifesaver for me. I now take 3600 mg/day as prescribed by my neurologist. The cautionary responses to your initial question so far reflect the fact that some (but not all or even most) people develop bothersome side effects that cause them to stop or adjust their dosage of gabapentin. If you remain uncertain, I suggest you talk with your prescriber or get a second opinion. It would be a shame for you to miss out needlessly on one of the most effective medicines for neuropathic pain.

I take the generic for Lyrica. I have taken it for many years. When I first started I was on 25mg of Lyrica. I found myself stopping in the middle of a sentence and forget what I wanted to say. I found that your body has to get used to it. They later put me on 150mg Lyrica three times a day. I found that I mainly just need it at night so I could sleep. I find I can deal with my feet better during the day. I later reduced it to 100mg at night only. I read something on here before about Vicks vapor rub first and then capsaicin later helping. After using capsaicin cream for a few weeks I decided to give my feet a rest. Now I don't have all the tingling I had before just once in a while in bed and then my feet relaxes and they feel better. I hope my experience might help someone.
