Hip replacements for fractured hip due to osteoporosis

My limited view is anecdotal - my mom had lupus/Lymphoma. She was on prednisone and then had chemo. Ultimately, the ball wore through the thin bone of the socket and they had to remove the entire joint because there was nothing to attach to. I also heard an orthopedist (webinar) say that by the time people with OP get to him, it's too late to do anything. I'll be following to see what others say.

My hip deteriorated from ostopenia to severe osteoporosis- probably due to extended time on drugs like Prednisone. I ended up fracturing my hip (total break) by overstepping it while exercising with no fall.

The ortho surgeon noted that the porousness and poor condition of the bone posed challenges, but they were able to do a hip replacment. That was 2 years ago. He did a good job and I have not had any problems.

It was important to find a very experienced surgeon who was used to complex procedures.

That is a good question. I believe this happens all the time. I had a hip replacement in June. When I told the surgeon that I was on Evenity and had mushy hip bones, he said no problem. He said that he could use additional hardware if necessary, but it wasn’t necessary. After the surgery when I told him about my fears of falling and fracturing a hip, he said that I wouldn’t be fracturing the titanium hip. Maybe the other one.

@shehriar Thank you so much for responding! I have asked this question of a few doctors and they said no, no, no. Then say take the drugs so you won't break your hip! I always wondered why you couldn't get a hip replacement (depending on the severity of the break) and now I know that you can. Thank you! Happy and Strong Bones to you~

Yes, I’m sure it may not always work, but nice to reduce one fear a little!!!
