I want to applaud the “ It's the memories that are precious, not the objects, and I still have the memories” thought 👏.
Regarding the things; visual items take a picture, add a caption to reflect the meaning, and add into a photo album (better yet put onto a memory stick or iCloud site) watch every so often. Say good bye to the things, give away to those in need if you can.

Absolutely! "“ It's the memories that are precious, not the objects, and I still have the memories." I've been really good about "stuff" - china, silver, glassware, souvenirs & "treasures" but memories are harder - much has gone to family or those who are in need/want of what we once used.
Memories, though, I value. I was going through photos today on Picasa - dating all the way to 2005 - thousands of images, and physically they take less space than a can of Coke. Screening out junk and duplicates - which deletes them from the computer, the cloud and the phone.
We just talked - when we go back to Minnesota this summer, all of our photos and slides will go to the digitizer for conversion, so we can do the same. It will clear out 2 deep drawers of photos and 4 or more "banker boxes" of slides.
We own a video picture frame, where we have a rotating slide show of current and past photos, and a separate function for short video clips. Not only do we enjoy it, but our young grandsons can watch it for hours, remembering our adventures together and asking about Mom & Auntie when they were little.
