At what age do you stop driving?

Posted by cathy58 @cathy58, Feb 19 9:46am

I am 65 and since November 2023 I have had some pretty good health issues and have had cataract surgery. My daughter who does not live with me has been driving my car so if I needed to go somewhere her or one of my grandchildren would take me. So now she doesn’t really think I should be driving anymore because now I’m on oxygen. Do I give up driving and sell my car? What would you do?

Keep yourself independent period- one has to be careful as a parent when they start to get older and I'm talking 80'S most people are still in the work force @ your age I was until 70+ in my humble opinion your car situation with your daughter and brands sounds more of a super convenience & savings for them - don't let anyone dictate when how and where you go you'll know yourself when not to step out in your vehicle still paying the insurance taxes & up keep?

The question is not what age should a person stop driving, the question should be what health reasons should a person have to prevent them from driving. Lots of good drivers in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s even 90s so as long as healthy drive just do it defensively good luck Dave

I agree 100% any person reguardless of AGE - my point & concerns was being independent not people with medical issues going out on the roads- also correct me if I'm wrong the daughter wanted her moms car for THEIR personal use & convince- let e toss this out if daughter or granddaughter had serious accident with car even death who would be on the financial hook God Bless all our wonderful seniors protect your independence you've earned it

The scientific literature confirms that people in their eighties and above have a higher serious accident rate than younger folks. My wife and I live in an independent living residence and most of the people stilll drive. But I have noted numerous cases of serious accidents by some of the residents here and they are still driving.
Our government(s) don't manage the problem of senior drivers very well, but I don't think our government manages our problems very well in most areas.
For example, I obtained my first dirvers license at age 14 during World War II. 70 years later I had no trouble renewing my license and my driving abilities were never examined after age 14. As long as I passed the multiple-choice written test and a vision I was passed without an evalaation of my driving skills.
