Tymlos injection sites

Posted by karenw9 @karenw9, Sep 18, 2023

I was told to only inject tymlos on my stomach. But I'm very small and have limited room on my stomach. I'm able to get 4 sites only for injections. It feels as if I'm always injecting in the same place. Anyone else have this problem, and if so what have you done about it? Thanks!

@maradeur

I've been getting bruising at the injection site on my belly..ideas why?

I also bruise occasionally from my injections. I believe if we hit a blood vessel, we bruise. I’ve been injecting since June of 22 and I still have the occasional bruise and I have a bit of a fatty belly.

Does anyone inject Tymlos into the thigh? It is a subcutaneous injection.

Thank you for any insight.

I had horrible side effects from the full dose of Tymlos, a bad headache, dizziness, light headedness and nausea. As suggested by @windyshores, I cut back to 2 clicks or 20 mcg. I have slowly worked up to 4 clicks or 40 mcg which is a half a dose. I am tolerating this after a week. My endo believes that it doesn't matter how much you take. It works by kicking up the amount of parathyroid hormone briefly.

@franie, I started on Tymlos in June of 2023 and, like you, the headache was horrible. So, I decreased my dose for several months before working back up to full dose. I still get a headache soon after the injection but it only lasts about an hour. I found that if I take xtra strength Tylenol just before the injection it helps with the headache. Good luck to you!

Hello @ykr, I combined your discussion with another discussion of the same title, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/tymlos-injection-sites.

@karenw9 started the discussion wondering about Tymlos injection sites as well and may appreciate seeing some of the other responses you received from @jmla, @maradeur and @drsuefowler.

@maradeur how long does it last? What time of day? Do you hydrate and eat something salty? Do you have a blood pressure cuff? I did better switching to morning and also, oddly, did better getting active rather than resting afterward. We are all different but there are things you can play around with. Four clicks is good but of course 5 is better!! Sorry it's so hard. It was for me too but eventually I got to 7.

I just started on Tymlos and had my first dose yesterday with instruction from a nurse. She said to pinch about an inch and raise the area to make sure there is fat tissue where I'm going to inject. She said that it's fine to inject on the thigh in an area that has enough fat tissue (pinch an inch), and not on any veins that you can see under the skin. She also said that the back of the arm is another option, but you'd need someone else to administer it that way. I was told to avoid injecting again in the same area since the tissue can become hardened and then you can't use that site again. I have some belly fat but I am quite thin. I'm interested to learn from people with more experience: How do people manage to use a different site each time? And after how long can you return to the same site? Has anyone experienced their tissue becoming hardened and what can be dome about it?
Thanks so much for the support of this group! As a new beginner I feel that I already need support to keep doing this for even one more day, and two years seems quite daunting!!

I personally did not worry too much about injecting in the same area. You can see where recent shots were and just avoid them. I didn't keep track with a chart or anything but did rotate around navel. I didn't feel it was a big worry or hard to do. Of course don't do all the shots in one spot!

Hurray that you have started! I miss Tymlos. I felt safe the entire time!

(My kid has type 1 diabetes and absorption is an issue with overuse of an area for insulin. Type1's are injecting, and/or many are inserting pump and/or continuous glucose monitor so there are multiple ways to build scar tissue in tummy and elsewhere.)

Thanks for your response, @windyshores! It's very helpful to hear that you didn't have to keep track with a chart, and that you miss Tymlos - I haven't thought of it as something I might miss in future.

This is interesting. I was told to only inject Tymlos in the belly by both the manufacturer and pharmacist. Please keep updating your progress. I hope it works for you.
