I need help getting off of 80mg omeprazole

Posted by jazzgirl @jazzgirl, Feb 23 9:30am

Has anyone weaned off of 80mg ? I take 40mg in the morning and 40mg with dinner. My doctor wants me to stop taking the evening 40mg every other day and use pepcid instead on those days . and then stop evening dose completely after two weeks. I'm concerned that's too fast I stoped cold turkey with only 20mg and had severe acid reflux that's why My gi doctor put me on 80mg.

At some point you may want to try Reflux Gourmet. Can purchase on Amazon. Fixed my LPR I had for over a year. All natural, take after meals and before bed. Worth a try.

I have been on 40mg of Protonix for 30 years recently I saw a nutritionist who gave me natural supplements and I am now taking 20mg. I have cut out tomatoes and onions, which may be is helped. I have the occasional small attack and I just take Tums. I would also like to totally get off them because I know they cause dementia and that is some thing I think about constantly, especially when I can’t remember anything. I also tried to go off them an alternate 20 mg every other day, but same thing my stomach was really bad I think I’m going to reflux gourmet and see how that works for me

@jeanadair123 try using Zantac or Pepcid on the alternate days, then slowly replace to Protonix days with those other meds. The H-2 inhbitors like Zantac and Pepcid are easier to get off overall and can be taken as needed, eventually. They can temporarily, slowly, replace the Protonix and then you can taper those (they can be cut in half or quarter etc.). Eventually maybe you can just take Tums as needed!

Some people have good results with slippery elm as a supplement, if that might be worth a try?

My nutritionist gave me the power slippery elm powder I was supposed to put it in water it was disgusting. I still have the full jar.

After reading all the above I did some research and found that a lot of people recommended Gavison it has Sodium Alginate, Sodium bicarbonate, Calcium Carbonate but you have to make sure that you buy it from the UK as the American one does not have this in it.
I just ordered some off Amazon so I will let everyone know how it works it had great reviews. Not cheap but if it works?

Oh, that does sound gross. I've never tried it before (I saw it on a list of supplements that may help with reflux), and I always assumed it was taken in capsules.

I understand the name for the Gaviscon with alginate is Gaviscon Advance. I recommend using that, it creates a barrier so the acid doesn't irritate your esophagus. The advice of @windyshores is good.

FYI- I am also on thyroid meds taken early morning on an empty stomach and take reflux gourmet before bed. As long as there is a 4 hour window between the 2 meds, Dr. says it’s okay . It’s helped me with nighttime reflux and weaning off other ppi’s and other meds.Hope this helps.
