I have 80 percent blockage in right carotid. Surgery recommended. I am 79, still working full time, office manager, active,. I am worried about side effects and not being able to continue working, or living independently. The surgeon says this is a common surgery, and all should
be fine, but adds that the surgery can also have big risks, nerve damage in neck, face, difficulty swallowing, etc. Any comments would be welcome. Thank you.

You sound to be reasonably fit to still be working as office manager at 79-years of age. Well done
As for the surgery, all I can do is to give my feed back after the left carotid endarterectomy.
Like you my artery was around the same level of plaque and other debris. As the two surgeons told me after the 4+ hour operation. “I must have had a well and truly mix-spent youth!!”
I certainly did, back then, I was smoking and drinking, socialising, especially entertaining customers as Sales Director.
I gave up smoking 50-years ago, still liked a drink or two. But now free from either
Having had 3 previous TIA and some 12 weeks ago a minor stroke
As my op went well and in recovery mode (unfortunately with this insomnia)
I recommend you Go for the procedure to avoid any such stroke potential

malliecallie, I understand your position on this, there is nothing easy about any surgery. however at 80% blocked I would not wait too long to have it done. the only problem I had was that I would not do the stent method. I was in at 7am stayed overnight and out the next day. I will be praying for your quick recovery.
