Chest numbness after mastectomy, strange feeling: Does it go away?

I'm two months in from a single right masectomy- I have an expander and am numb totally at this point. I go in the 18th to get the expander removed and the imposter filled.

It has made me question the inital recommendations to get rid of both breasts even if there is no risk. The reasons- because clothes would fit better, surgical outcome is easier to manage, no more pancake smashers, etc....
Once I got to Mayo- I learned that our breasts don't talk to each other... each is their own "mistress" this was good news to me. -- I was thrilled to hear a double was not always the "only" answer and everyone is different. I chose single even though I had a large mass in my right - my left was clean and has a maybe 1-10% chance. I chose to take that minimal risk in order to keep full feeling in my left breast.

I may get feeling back in some % in my right side. It's always a personal decision. Two reasons guiding me as well- my daughter last year had a double mastectomy and has lots of radiated pain along with total numbness.
my neice also chose a double and has had nothing but problems. I figured dealing with one worked for me.

I had both removed and in my experience, numbness got better with time. It does take awhile.

Everyone is different. Over time you may get back “some” feeling.
I’m 18 years a survivor and the numbness is better but not completely gone. You get use to it. I don’t notice it anymore.

I have very little feeling in the entire area and surgery was almost five years ago.

My bilateral was about 18 months ago and still numb; being BRCA+ risk of recurrence on other side was high so didn't want to take the chance I'll live with the numbness - which is weird; but worth the mental comfort knowing the chance of recurrence in second breast is gone.

I too have Brca2 as a risk, so i had both removed. My numbness is still there under my left armpit was 3 sentinel nodes were removed. The nerve block stopped any surgical pain, but some numbness is still there a bit over 2 years since my 2nd surgery. I went to the occupational therapist for some soreness and sharp pain in my left hand. From her i found i am way too stiff and my shoulders are too rounded in. What I said??? I had frozen should and trigger finger the first year. Stretching is so important after this surgery. Here i am today back in to learn some stretching I was taught right after my surgery and with my frozen shoulder that i stopped doing. Yep. I am 63 and not following directions. Tomorrow i continue my stretching.

11 years out from double mastectomy and still numb. Like someone said, you get used to it. I remember when I was healing I frequently had itching where lymph nodes were removed and couldn’t feel scratching so I couldn’t satisfy the itch.

I am 14 mos past double mast - no reconstruction, and have spots of numbness remaining. It does get better with time. I would say 80% of my chest area is feeling again. Mostly at joint of arm/armpit that are still somewhat numb.
