Use of Tymlos for Nonunion wrist fracture

Posted by kimberman @kimberman, Feb 16 11:53am

Hello,
I have a radial wrist fracture at the distal end. After casting for 6 weeks and PT, a CT scan has revealed early signs of nonunion. My Endocrinologist has put me on 80 mg of Tymlos (I also have osteoporosis) and is hopeful this will cause bone formation and heal wrist fracture. Orthopedic surgeon disagrees and wants to perform surgery (plate and screws). Anyone have experience with taking Tymlos for purpose of healing a fracture? Also under consideration (by me) is adding a bone stimulator (requiring recasting for 6 weeks). Anyone have a positive result from bone stimulator? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tymlos is reputed to help heal fractures but I wish I knew if that applied to yours. Maybe you could get an opinion from an endocrinologist-?

Thank you. My endocrinologist prescribed Tymlos with the hope that it will heal the fracture. Time will tell!

i would opt for the surgery than taking a quick fix with medication. these drs promote these drugs and really have very little knowledge of them the surgery will ensure you wrist will heal perfectly. my granddaughter and she had surgery and that was about 12 yrs ago and it worked fine

I was grateful for Tymlos. My spine went from -3.7 to -2.5, If the full dose is too much, you can start with a lower dose and ramp up so your body gets used to it. I believe it is most effective for trabecular bone but not sure if wrist is trabecular or cortical. The endocrinologist would know so they probably feel it will help even if it is cortical. My hip (cortical) also improved, from -3.3 p -2.9.

In March of 2023 I had a right patella fracture (it broke in half) and a left tibia/fibula/ankle fracture. Both required surgery. A month after the patella surgery the sutures broke and the fracture was a non union at the time. I started on Tymlos in June for OP treatment. The surgeon said that a benefit of the Tymlos would also be to assist in fracture healing. Although my patella remains in 2 pieces enough bone has grown to have avoided a 2nd surgery.

Wrist is cortical. Is the bone set, so it’s not moving while you try Tymlos?

I did know that. I have taken Tymlos for about 1 month without, but next week it will be cast for 6 weeks. I will also be using a bone stimulator while casted.

Good luck! Sounds like you’re doing everything you can! How is the Tymlos going?
