I've not looked at the cpm scale. I use the primary reading shown, which is what they use to "discharge" you after a treatment. They wait until it hovers around 3 at three feet and then tell you that you are good to go.

I just had my second treatment a week ago. My current reading at three feet is around .2 to .3. Obviously the closer you get to the body the higher the reading and the further away you get the lower the reading. Currently, at one week from treatment I am .2 to .3 at the three foot range with no reading at all once you get out to about six feet away.

Your lead apron is a great idea!
