Toupet Fundoplication post op problem

Posted by nikki0120 @nikki0120, Oct 8, 2022

I am four weeks post and was doing very well advancing my diet. I was even able to eat some chicken in very small bites. The last few days it seems my progress is going backwards. I have been drinking more of the meal replacement shakes because I am struggling to swallow anything. Today I tried to eat some scrambled eggs and after taking one small bite I can feel it stuck at the bottom of my throat. I contacted my surgeon and said just to continue drinking small sips and try to push the egg down and he will do a UGI study next week. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s very discouraging since I was doing so well.

Does the Mayo Clinic still offer the Linx procedure?

HiI had my toupet ( partial wrap) fundoplication on the 26th of May. I am now 4 days post op and I'm back home.So I'm not going to lie and I want to give my honest opinion of my story but remember everyone is different and copes differently.when I woke in recovery room I was obviously highly dosed on drugs and didn't feel any pain.back on the ward pretty sure I just dosed on and off. I realised pretty soon I could swallow with no issues despite having a gastric tube in my nose down in to my stomach. This was in place attached to a bag to drain contents and gas from the stomach. At first it wasn't bothering me but I was soon begging for it to be taken out. It was so thick and everytime I moved or spoke it was rubbing on my throat causing me to retch.. this hurt my stomach area. it was also causing me to swallow therfore filling me with more air. Had it removed later in the morning and that was such a relief.Had to have help to get out of bed and was up walking round the day after. The gas they use to bloat you up to be able to do the surgery is very uncomfortable in your chest and shoulders and it does feel like it very hard to breathe. you can breathe but it's uncomfortable... heavy.walking around definitely helps get rid of this.laxatives are a must as you get bunged up and can make you feel very sick and of course you can't be sick after this operation.Day 4 I feel pretty okay actually. I'm resting and tired. Not got much of an appetite but swallowing as not been an issue and I am able to burp. little burps.the gas bloat is real though but totally normally and I've told that will calm down after 2 to 3 months

I am planning on having a toupet fundiplocation next month for severe esophagitis and GERD . I am apprehensive about the procedure regarding possible side effects etc like problems swallowing and being able to maintain adequate nutrition. Can some of you please provide your thoughts and experiences? I’m hoping I’m making a good decision. I also don’t want to take the ppi medicine long term if possible .

I had the operation at Mayo in June. Dr Edwards. Best experience I have had. I was on morphine
for a couple of days and had no pain. Because the operation was done late in the day, I stayed over night 2 days. After getting food that I should not have had (too big of a bite not enough chewing) a few times I learned to eat small bites and chew. I stayed on liquid protein shakes. The last thing he said is stay on soft foods for life. Steak, Chicken, Bread will be difficult and ya know what he was right. My esophagus does not push food down very well. That said other than more gas than I would like to have, the operation was a raving success. Give your self several months to adapt.

I just found this Mayo Chat when I looked up the Toupet Fundoplication What great info to have. Looks like you are a year+ out. You might have moved on with life but if you see this, I would appreciate you writing back to tell me how you are doing. I had my surgery on 7-29-25, so I am only in the beginning of my journey.
Thank you.

I am fantastic. I feel good no heart burn but due to familiar history I do have to take omeprazole.
I can also eat meat and bread after the first 7 months. I am sure he told you to take small bites and chew often. Also , keep the nausea medicine at hand in case you get nauseous. I did have a mesh implant over my stomach opening. You might not have. Good Luck on your journey if you need anything let's find a way to keep in touch

Hi @jmedj55. I went to the Digestive Health Support Group home page and searched for toupee fundoplication. It looks like there are a few other discussion you might review as you wait for others to comment here.

It may help others know how to comment if you are comfortable sharing more about your journey. What brought you to this decision, how are you hoping it will improve your day-to-day? Why did you opt for toupet instead of Nissan fundoplication?

Hello .everyone ; I scheduled a toupet fundoplication next month for my GERD / severe esophagitis. I must admit I’m quite apprehensive about the procedure. Is anyone willing to talk about how things are going ? Apparently having difficulty swallowing, ongoing diarrhea and bloating are quite common . I’d appreciate your experiences to get a better idea what awaits me . Than you , John
