Hi @doglover71 and everyone. I can speak a little about the expertise at Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic's Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, & Nutrition is one of the largest in the world, with locations in Arizona, Florida, Minnesota and several communities throughout the Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS).

Within the department of endocrinology there are several specialty groups, including the
- Osteoporosis-Calcium Disorders Specialty Group https://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/osteoporosis-calcium-disorders-specialty-group/overview/ovc-20393283

The Osteoporosis-Calcium Disorders Specialty Group provides comprehensive outpatient and inpatient consultations for bone and calcium disorders. These include:
- Assessment of osteoporosis risk with bone densitometry
- Dietary counseling
- Advice regarding physiotherapy
- Medical consultations for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis

There are several members, including @artscaping, who work with endocrinologists at Mayo Clinic who can share their experiences at Mayo in Rochester, MN.

There is so much junk in the supplement world, that I actually search for such recommendations from people I have grown to trust.

She doesn't have me 100% on solutions, but I do use her to keep me up on health issues. Offering another opinion in my homework. I have no problem with these spokes people making money to compensate their hours of giving - and after a few years of following, she doesn't have a greedy bone in her.

I work closely with a very honest R&D department - 39 years old - and we have found some amazing stuff on the store shelf. Let me give you one example of many: bottle was labeled 100% standardized Grape Seed Extract in a health food store - there was not one grape molecule in it. It was cherries.

A former White House nutritionist told our marketing team one year that 60% of the labels on the store shelf were dishonestly labeled. Ugh.

But, in this article - that same R&D department created our version of Calcium Complex and promotes the need for D and K2 to direct the benefits to the bones? They are prestigious scientists with no need to be greedy, only honest (they get paid well not based on the company sales)...so I find it hard to swallow her view point on this all being useless for our bones.

I am not familiar with grape seed extract and cherry seed extract as I do not frequent "health" food stores. I think I was in one once when looking for an oil used to teach my dog odor discrimination. That they did not have. I do know that grapes and raisins can kill a dog and cherry pits contain cyanide. The wild cherry behind my house provided lots of cherry pits. Fortunately, the dog I had who vacuumed them up did not crush them so they passed through intact.

Researching opinions -something we should do, but boy! So many differing opinions. Look at this one that came to me today from a healthy minded “guru” I enjoy reading:

I responded to that for often a bigger picture leaves a different perspective.

I started with the fact that recommendations from people I trust (been following her a few years - pure heart) are part of my homework in this untrustworthy supplement world.

But it is all mute now; appears the article and my comments have been removed. So - not a trustworthy place to do homework for me.

Thank you for posting! Any chance you know a good endo at the jacksonville fl location?

REPLY

Maybe before we visit our endo, we can send a pdf of our med-related discussions from Mayo Connect postings. (Most practices provide online Q&A option for patients/doctors to communicate.) Also, bring with us to the copy to our appt so we can educate each other. That way we could get better recommendations for our treatment/choice of drug, etc. and better outcome.

Yes, I too felt the information ended with a commercial but I've heard some of the same information from a doctor who believes in more natural medical practices. Ugh....that's why I find determining my personal practices and goals is so overwhelming and why a 2nd (or maybe 3rd ) opinion is so important to me.

Just in case you haven't done this yet, you can go to the Mayo Clinic's website to see which endocrinologists work at each of Mayo's locations and read their bio's. When trying to narrow down a choice of doctors, I found it especially helpful to review the article/research listings as that confirmed for me if they had an interest and indepth knowledge in the specific area where I'm seeking additional information.
