PN & Acid Reflux?

Posted by Ray Kemble @ray666, Feb 8 12:04pm

I'm sure there have been earlier discussions on PN & acid reflux. I hope you don't mind my asking again. I have large fiber multi-neuropathy (no pain but poor balance), diagnosed in 2022. Oddly enough, for the past 6-8 weeks, I've been bothered by what I'm calling acid reflux (burps, gas, some shortness of breath, especially if I bend or twist). I sent a message to my PCP about this through the patient portal but haven't received a reply yet. I'm wondering if any others with PN, whether large or small fiber, have ever been told there's a connection between PN and acid reflux-like symptoms.

Yes mee too, I have also that sensation of acid reflux and a lot of saliva too. I had a esophageal ph_metry but it turned out negatve. The monitorization said no reflux.
My polyneuropathy affects also my sweat glands, . It started in both, legs, arms, but now I think now its haa spred.
I try to eat slowly and small quantities.. I have esomeiprazol in the list of drugs available in my prescriptions. For SFN.

Hi Ray…Gastro issues can be an issue of neuropathy…more specifically autonomic neuropathy. I have large fiber neuropathy…and was tested for autonomic neuropathy and that came back as positive. A quick google search will fill you in further. My neurologist had told me when you have one type of neuropathy, acquiring others is likely as well.
I think acid reflux can give the sensation of shortness of breath…and then once you start obsessing on it…it just magnifies it! Been there…the mind is powerfully good…and at times bad!
A simple test is to do some sort of activity, such as climbing stairs …and see if your breathing seems different than before.
Best wishes

Ray…I should also add it quite possibly may have nothing to do with neuropathy. Have you changed /added any new meds or supplements? Changed eating habits etc

Yes, I’ve been on prescription Omeprazole, from a gastroenterologist, for years. If I miss a dose, I am likely to have an esophageal spasm later that day. Believe me, you don’t want that experience. This started several years before my pain did, along with other malfunctions of my body, like intense itching, and sore mouth and tongue. I’ve developed issues throughout my digestive system now, which I treat accordingly. I have pain, weakness, etc from SFN, so I attribute these issues to polyneuropathy. The nerve damage is pretty much everywhere.
I really watch my diet later in the day, and usually avoid gas-causing foods at dinner. I have tums, Gas-x and more Omeprazole on hand!

Good morning, Steve (@stallen), gregoria (@gregoria), julbpat @julbpat),

Thanks for your posts! I believe I mentioned yesterday that I’d asked my question of my PCP and moments age received her reply. Although she didn’t say anything about acid reflux possibly being related to my PN, she did offer her advice, of which I find little surprising:

“You could try over-the-counter Prilosec or Nexium for two weeks to see if it helps with your symptoms. I would take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and wait 15-30 minutes before eating/drinking. Would recommend cutting back on coffee red sauces (like in pasta), spicy foods, acidic foods.”

My PCP apparently had forgotten that she had given me a script for Omeprazole some months ago, of which I still have a goodly supply. I’ll resume taking one each morning as she advises and see how that goes.

Any new meds or supplements recently? No, none that O can think of.

Climbing stairs? Oddly enough, I “enjoy” climbing stairs! As Michael J. Fox says in his Parkinson’s memoir, stairs (oddly enough) require the positive placement of feet, magically (almost) lessening a person’s difficulties with balance. Stairs, up or down, do that for me.
Let’s all have a good weekend!

Hi, @ray666! I've been taking something for GERD for decades, long before any symptoms of PN. But as soon as I found I had the neuropathy, I began the R-ALA and Benfotiamine.... and now I'm taking MetanX, as well. So far, my GERD doesn't seem to be worse, but I DO WONDER at times what effect these supplements may have on my stomach. I know you take some supplements, as well. You may want to read up on those particular supplements to see if any of them have GI side effects that could be causing your symptoms of late. Do you take them along with food, or on an empty stomach?
As to your doctor's "odd response," I think they can sometimes have so many things going on that they may miss a note on a specific med. And over the years, I have changed meds for my GERD several times.... so it might help to add the OTC Nexium just to see if it will help. If it does, you may ask the doc for the prescription-level Nexium to replace your Prilosec. Best wishes! Mike

Hi, yes my B12 is fine. I have SFN, diagnosed by punch biopsy. It affects pretty much every part of my body with some type of malfunction.

I, too, was diagnosed with peripheral small fiber neuropathy and developed GERD despite not ingesting “aggravating” food or liquids. I had not been told the two could be related. Thank you.
