Stage 4 Metatasized to Bones- Anyone at 10 years?

Posted by cal77 @cal77, Dec 30, 2023

For an otherwise healthy male, are there those of you that are still around for 10 years? I'm recently diagnosed and at 7 months...my Urologist said I have maybe 4 years, but then I see others out there are still around at 10 years...Is everyone different?

My husband is currently on this regimen. He’s thru 4 of the 6. It is palliative only for him - intended to reduce the size of the tumors to prevent spontaneous fractures & thereby improve quality of life. The cost - covered by VA - is $50,000. per infusion. I did some research & found just the vial of the Radium is almost $30,000. The balance is the associated costs. I don’t know what folks without insurance coverage do.

Cal 77. I think that when doctors give their life expectancy advise it is imprecise and too conservative. Thirty months ago my UCLA urologist told me that I had 4-5 years. That advise really depressed me, however, . I am doing fine, post surgery, post Erleada and ADT, 15 months off of all meds, PSA .01 and T under 100 and 30 months post diagnosis. I am now 77 and I have decided that I will be around until 82 or more and my thinking that way has made me a lot happier. I am now on a plant based diet and I hope that it will help to keep me around longer. I did however, update my estate plan etc, just in case my doctors life expectancy was right. Good luck to us all.

How much does radium 223 cost? Based on a 2023 study conducted in the Netherlands, radium 223 costs between $43,000 and $57,000 for a six-cycle treatment. Most health insurance plans cover a majority of the cost. Most government healthcare plans, such as Medicare, cover Xofigo for prostate cancer. 9K for 6

The reason the data is inaccurate regarding Over Survival (OS) with metastatic stage 4 prostate cancer is that many researchers and doctors are still referring to the SEERS data. That data is related to men whom mostly had just ADT treatment. Honestly, doctors do not know what the OS of each patient. It depends on several factors. Age, Other health issues, how well you respond to treatment, whether you can complete all available treatment, Genetics and Genomics etc.

I asked my doctors recently if she could connect me with patient similar to myself. Those who are stage 4 bone only, that received and completed triplet therapy with ADT, Darolutamide, and Chemotherapy Docetaxel.

When it came right down to it - she said she could not because I am so different. My response was different. I had radiation first and 10 chemo cycles which was over aggressive and different.

It just shows you how cancer reacts differently in each persons body.

So, what is left are markers such PSA, Alkaline Phosphate, and scans. Secondary markers are things like exercise, a 70% plant based diet, and mental attitude.

The latest data that came out of the ARSEN trial, showed that of the men that received triplet therapy with Darolutamide - after 5+ years they are still alive and Castrate Resistance is still Not Reached (NR). I would say that is some good news.

Xtandi has now been approved for Castrate Sensitive patients. It appears that the 2nd generation drugs treatments are being pushed to the left outside of the Castrate Resistant area.

This means upfront treatment is having positive OS. Hopefully this also means more treatments are coming for Castrate Resistant cancers too. I'm hoping.

Finally, don't let anyone tell you how many years you have to live. They do not really know. Keep Fighting and trust in Jesus.

Our urologist was horrible! Told him if he didn't take Lupron he would be dead in 6 months! Gave a script for Xtandi, didnt mention any grants for it or the $14,000 that it would cost!
We went to Moffitt (because we live close by). My husband was diagnosed last Feb. with PC with spots on his hip bone and lymph nodes. He was started on Lupron and was accepted into a Taft grant program that pays for the Xtandi. He is now taking a break from everything because his PSA has stayed low. When his PSA begins to rise he will be back on Xtandi. So glad we left the urologist!
