Found a 5cm mass in my husband’s colon
Does anyone have any insight or can offer positive info on this.
I don’t know how to cope with this

[QUOTE] "The best doctors are Cleveland clinic in Ohio with most success rate"[end quote].
Well, thank you so much!
All of the cancer surgeons and specialists at World Renowned Mayo Clinic will be so happy to hear that you have brought this to everyones attention!
Paul
Sorry I thought I read you were in Ohio and would not have to travel must have been another post . But yes if in the area of Mayo ! They had top notched doctors
Where in the colon was the mass found? I had a fairly large mass in my sigmoid, so big it was causing a partial blockage. It was discovered during a colonoscopy (I get one every year) and it grew that big in just over 14 months. Mine was found on 4/11/19, surgery was 5/6/19 and I did several rounds of chemo. I am now almost to my 5 year appointment and still NED. Stay hopeful. As others have said, colon cancer isn’t a death sentence.
The common next steps are a CT scan, bloodwork and then consult with a Colo rectal surgeon
Try to take one day at a time
Mayo-Rochester did my surgery and oncology workup, then I went to Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing for chemo and now regular surveillance blood work/scans.
Highly recommended.
That said, distance matters for the post-op chemotherapy due to the frequent travel involved. I did MCHS in Red Wing - while it's slightly farther away than Mayo in Rochester, it was much easier to get there and is a much smaller complex to navigate once there.
I had 6.5 cm tumor removed from my colon in July 2022. I was fortunate in the respect that the cancer had not spread. My oncologist gave it a 92% chance of not recurring. After serious discussions with both my wife and Doctor, I chose not to do chemo. My colostomy reversal was done In September 2022. It has now been almost two years and I remain cancer free and feel better than ever. I am having blood test and CT scans every six months, and should soon “graduate” to yearly. Colonoscopy every three years.
It is definitely not a death sentence, as so many before me have said, but is a physical and emotional battle that you and your husband will fight together and win. Wishing you only the best.

Above all, please remain respectful.
While this online community is hosted by Mayo Clinic, everyone is welcome no matter where peoople are being treated.
@saundini2, back to you. Like @rhs and @rjjacobsen said, colon cancer is treatable. But hearing the news that your husband has cancer is scary and there's a lot to take in. I'm sure you've started learning much more already since you first posted.
I'd like to add to @lisag03's questions to find out what you've learned about your husband's cancer. Do you know where in the colon the tumor is located? Will your husband have surgery? How is his overall health? How are YOU doing?
