Driving with Numb Feet.

Posted by davidpn @davidpn, Jul 25, 2023

Over the past year the numbness in my feet has increased and at times I find my foot slipping off the brake. I’ve kept my driving to less than 2 miles and this might occur about once per drive.

My license is due for renewal and the medical form filled out three years ago (numbness not as bad) is due to be resubmitted. I can’t lie to doctors and pretend everything is okay but I do have a question.

Can any one recommend a shoe, currently using skechers which has helped with walking, that might help this problem.

Thanks much.

@ray666 My husband says I drive like a little old lady. You probably are like me and have the greatest respect and admiration for them and a lot of drivers now, in realizing they are being extra careful for their own benefit and more importantly, for the benefit and safety of others. I feel a little sorry for those times in my life I might have gotten frustrated behind one of those drivers. We are seeing the world through much different lenses now.

Hi, Debbie (@dbeshears1)

I had to laugh when I read what you said, “We are seeing the world through much different lenses now.” I’m in the middle of writing a story for my writers’ group about how much our lives have changed with PN. What inspired me was remember how as a teen I’d become enthralled with Universal’s 1941 movie Wolf Man and how the movie had made me wish I, too, could shape-shift, not into a wolf but into something, anything than what I was: a poor kid growing up in the Bronx. I never did manage to shape-shift, not until now anyway, 60 years later, when, thanks to my PN, I’m shape-shifting into a guy I hardly know is me! 🙂

Cheers!

I plan to try ALA also. I was wondering for those who have had improvement of systems with ALA. Are you using type R, or synthetic?

Hello!

I have just requested a meeting with one of our local CDRS providers. Although I don't sense an immediate need, I am trying to do a little medium- and long-term thinking. Already, I'm aware of some loss of sensation in my feet, and I am imagining a day when I will need to learn how to use hand controls if I am going to be able to continue driving safely. Do some of you reading this thread about Driving With Numb Feet use hand controls? If so, may I ask what sort of hand controls have worked the best for you? It seems there is a variety, and when that day comes, I would like to be able to select the style of hand controls that comes most naturally to someone who has been driving for 50 years using floor pedals. Thank to all for any advice!

Ray, I don't use hand controls but what I've learned is that the dealership for your Jeep is best to give you advise. I know of someone who has the hand controls, and they had the dealership order and purchase the hand controls and that dealership also installed the hand controls. I think she paid $1,800 which included installation and some small training. Price likely depends on vehicle.

Good morning, Ed. $1,800 is actually a little less than what I've been quoted. These quotes, however, were all for non-specific vehicles. I like what you say about going to the dealership, in my case to the Jeep dealership. That makes sense. I'll do some checking on this later today. –Ray

Looks like ALA is a nogo for me. Took 1 300 mg capsule 2 hrs after lunch. Upset stomach, excessive salivation ? Reflux? I don't how anyone can take 600 to 1200 mg daily. A tougher stomach than me.

It’s a common problem with ALA. Some have found starting with 100mg and gradually adding more until reaching the 600 to 1200mg allowed them to get used to ALA. I’ve heard it also helps to take it with a bite of food like a piece of a banana.

Capsules are 300 mg. To take smaller dose. I'm assuming break open capsule, and weigh? Taking it in a powder forms sounds worse?, but would be a smaller amount.
I also take a med for a stomach issue. I'm sure may also affect digestive juices??
