Evenity and heart

Posted by windyshores @windyshores, Dec 25, 2023

Has anyone had a fast or irregular heart beat after Evenity? I am going to have the injection tomorrow. Recently both COVID and Paxlovid caused rapid and irregular heart beat so I am feeling vulnerable. Thanks!

They just give 1 mg instead of 5. Not sure why your doctor said that. It is not common though. I am getting lower dose only because of kidney issues.

Thank you for the info regarding alternate doses of Reclast. It is so helpful to read information that I haven't been able to find
in talking with my doctor and on internet searches. Doctor visits
are so short.

@susanfalcon52 I have one more provider to meet with. Right now I am inclined to risk another set of Evenity injections. I had hope to do at least 3 because that is when the most bone growth happens. Then Reclast.

My side effect of abdominal pressure has eased, It was worst for 4 days after the shots and has gradually diminished. Allergist gave me some helpful advice: thigh shots, not tummy, pause between shots, stay in office 15+ minutes and hydrate too.

@kristie2 that's great. It's given 30 days after the last Evenity. I asked if bone marker tests needed to be done to determine timing and all my providers said no.

My endo Md said that she would do the bone markers again before starting the reclast infusions.

Hello. I saw one of your comments from several months ago and I have some questions if you don't mind. I was just diagnosed with what my doc says is severe osteoporosis, although its not as bad as some of what I've seen here. Mine is -3.4 spine, and -2.5 and -2.6 at hips. I was reading about your experiences with Tymlos and now Evenity, and those are the meds I need to quickly choose from. Like you I have heart issues, i.e., heart attack with stent placement, and a DVT at a different time, but both were a few years ago. I have CHF that is not as well controlled as i would like, and suffer from painful racing and pounding heart.
And as a long-term result of the heart issues, I now have kidney disease, with eGFR in the high 30s to mid 40s. I'm finding that I'm terrified of both these meds, at least as related to my cardio side effects. How long did it take you to adjust your Tymlos dose to avoid the tachycardia? With Evenity are there any noticable cardio side effects, or are the potential serious cardio side effects silent? And is one or the other harder on your kidneys? Another issue I'm facing is that I'm not able to stop some of the meds I take that make osteoporosis worse. I have COPD and must use a corticosteroid inhaler; and I take loop diuretics for the CHF that I must continue (can't take thyazides). So whatever med I take is going to have to fight to work as well. Goodness, that's a lot. My apologies. Guess I'm just feeling overwhelmed. And its just me, so I have to be able to manage whatever I'm taking enough to be able to function. Any info. you have, or experiences you or anyone else have had will be helpful and greatly appreciated.

@jenx68 it would seem you are a good candidate for Tymlos, which is very effective for spine. I have afib with tachycardia and didn't have heart issues with Tymlos. Yes heart could speed up a little very briefly, but I hydrated well and that seemed to help (I have low bp).

I am not a doctor but the Evenity site seems to say if you have a history of heart attack or clot, it might not be the best drug. It is hard because cardiologists don't know bones and endo's don't know heart!

Neither drug affects kidneys. My GFR is also in the 30's and 40's (but Cystatin C is a little higher).

It would seem Tymlos is the better path for you but ask your docs!

I have bad Gerd @8fish and could not tolerate Foasamaz. I am doing a low dose of Reclast but more frequently. If I cannot do that, especially if my kidneys react, I will try Actonel. Thank you!

Thank you for replying @windyshores. I’m so sorry about your GERD issues with Fosamax. I just read your recent post about your troubles with Evenity, too. That must be frustrating. The reason I want to take Fosamax instead of Reclast is because I have clenching and TMJ issues on the left side of my jaw. I have one implant on that side and each of the other molars on the left have had two or three root canals. So my dentist and endodontist have both warned me not to take a bisphosphonate by infusion. I’m on Tymlos now and I know I have to follow that with some type of bisphosphonate to lock in my gains. I’d just rather take Fosamax since then I wouldn’t have to worry about my teeth. To make matters more complicated one of my doctors just told me she doesn’t think Fosamax works as well because it’s in pill form and not an infusion. I still don’t think Reclast is safe for me, so I’m hoping she’s wrong. If anyone has an opinion about locking in gains with Fosamax, I hope they’ll post it here.

Look into locking in gains with hrt. Some people in this site have used hrt to lock in gains and are holding after five years. Wish I could remember who posted.

Just read this. I had some tachycardia and possibly very brief afib last night so was nervous. But I went to the hospital endo office for the two Evenity injections because I really have no choice. I am thinking I might do just 4 months' worth anyway because those are the main bone-growing months and I have already had good gains on Tymlos.

After the injections I had heavy chest pressure, like an elephant on my chest! And felt very woozy. This has happened to me before with other injections and I suspect it is the polysorbate 20. Not a side effect, more of a "reaction" and not totally unexpected. It eased over 90 minutes, gradually lessening.

I am happy I did it. I want to do Evenity then my doc will do 20% dose Reclast and then I hope to do 2.5mg Reclast and be done with meds for awhile (I have read that 2.5mg is as effective as the full dose of 5mg and I am small). My doc is nervous about Reclast with my heart and kidney issues, but, again, there is no good choice.

I have several spinal compression fractures, half from a traumatic fall and half from osteoporosis- so I am motivated!

Did you get half of your spinal fractures from normal daily activities and what is the recovery for those like?

Half (3 lumbar fractures) from one unwise movement. Recovery such as it is, painful and disabling for months. They never heal- just stabilize. No fun!
