Explosive diarrhea, gerd and hives

Posted by clkurth @clkurth, Jan 26 9:53am

Our daughter has been experiencing episodes of explosive, watery diarrhea, persistent gerd and occasional hives. She was prescribed an antibiotic, and has done an elimination diet, but these efforts have not helped. She is also on bupropion, and I am wondering if this could be symptoms of serotonin syndrome? She takes Tums which helps only minimally. We’re baffled! Anyone’s help would be much appreciated.

OTC: Have you tried activated charcoal capsules?
Rx: What about Cholestyramine?
Sounds to me like you need a new gastroenterologist to get you out of a hellish state of being.

Has she been tested for Alpha Gal?
Or had allergy tests done?

Has your daughter seen a gastroenterologist?
Sound like she needs a colonoscopy for diagnosis as well as endoscopy for persistent GERD.

I agree! Have her get a colonoscopy/enndoscopy. Not sure why a dr would prescribe antibiotics b4 finding the real cause.

Well this is going to sound nuts but, has she ever been bitten by a tick? The Lone Star Ticks cause Alpha Gal a meat allergy. It happens hours after eating meat. Mine was always around 2-4 AM Id wake up doubled over with stomach pain, followed by explosive diarrhea and sometimes vomiting, after that I would break out in hives from scalp to souls of my feet, then sweating, followed by violent shaking and chills. These episodes vary from person to person. Sometimes I would eat meat (red meat, pork etc not chicken or fish) And FYI meat products come in all kinds of strange things, like marshmallows, and vaccines in the form of gelatin. I lived for decades with it and never knew what it was!
A simple blood test can rule out Alpha Gal.

Well, I remember my friend saying to me the last time I had an "episode" aka anaphylaxis shock, that whatever it was it was an allergy because of the hives. You mention your daughter having had hives it's the clue, that says please go see an allergist before submitting her to a battery of invasive and scary tests, particularly for a child.
And I also remember my allergist walking in and asking me what was going on and he said I know what you have and you're allergic to red meat and I thought what???? He said he would do one simple blood test and let me know in a few days and that I should avoid all mammalian meat and products until I heard back.
I got back the results and sure enough he was right, and for me it was a relief to know. I had been dealing with it since 1990 and that was 2013. Had no idea that anyone of those episodes could have killed me although I felt like I was dying in all of them.
From what I understand even her Pediatrician can run this test, its the Alpha IGe test.
Good luck and a meat allergy is a simply thing to fix and bonus she will probably be healthier because of it, red meat is not good for anyone 🙂

Stool testing done? I would start there and then do endoscopy and colonoscopy with a really good gi.

Sound like a possible Mast Cell Activation syndrome issue to me…..thats something you need to be informed about…..more common than once thought. If you have EDS then really impt. For you to know about it as it can be and often is , a co-morbid condition. I have both of these…..it’s a battle but I am finally winning. It was kicked up fully and terribly by the covid shots and booster…..it was like my immune system broke. I would take a look at MCAS.

In the last year ii have experienced explosive diarrhea-it’s so horrible and embarrassing. I became a prisoner in my own house.
My doctor finally put me on a Steroid Entocort. It helped immensely! Unfortunately steroids are only used temporarily. However it has given my intestines some healing time.
I am now trying the Mediterranean Diet for Beginners and that is working well for me.
Hope this helps your daughter. Such a helpless feeling as a parent.
Best of luck moving forward.
