I'm new too. My pain came first in a grocery store. I figured my shoe laces were too tight. A couple of years later it became a real problem with pain in my ankles and feet. Cramps were terrible. BUT, only two things happened before the pain. 1) Grocery shopping for longer than a 1/2 hour. My new shoes helped. 2) Alcohol. I sat down for a small glass of wine and that nite in bed I thought I was going to die from the pain in my ankles. I am not diabetic, but apparently pre-diabetic. Had to give the wine away.
What helps. I take magnesium capsule before going to the grocery store. I also take a capsule in the morning and again at bedtime. I take potassium in the morning, too. It definitely helps me.

Hello @saraabrooks, I see that you recently joined Connect and would like to welcome you. I'm not sure how many people are following this discussion since it's from 2017 and the member who started the discussion has not posted any follow up. I also have been labeled pre-diabetic for most of my adult life but made some lifestyle changes the past few years to try and improve my health. I don't have the neuropathy pain but just the numbness.
