Bone density test other than DEXA

Posted by ellerbracke @ellerbracke, Apr 5, 2023

Hi! Several weeks ago there were a few posts about a differnt type of bone scan that tells more than just the density. If memory serves, it’s an out-of-pocket procedure, I THINK around $ 400.00 (?), and the nearest place to me that “it” can be performed is somewhere in/near Asheville, NC.
If anyone knows what I’m referring to, please enlighten me. It may have been some type of fance x-ray, but, again, I read about it with interest and failed to flag it or make note of the details.
Thank you!

Indeed. It's called an Echolight Scan. I had it done at the location in Asheville. It shows me to be in better shape than the Dexa did and it also shows my bone strength to be really good, which was very reassuring. The guy who owns the location was really wonderful as well. I think the name of the business is Strength X, but don't quote me on that. It cost me $200 and I had it done in October, 2022.

Thank you so much! I remembered roughly what and where, but internet search of “bone scan other than DEXA” produced nothing. 18 months ago I was borderline between osteopenia and osteoperosis in right hip. With AI and Zometa things probably did not improve. However, being quite active for my 73 years (I just came back inside after re-installing some brick edging that my handy guy put down lopsided, and then level the area and carefully - by the handful - fill in and smoothe out with 4 bags of mulch that I lugged around. After a brisk 2 mile walk earlier in the morning.) So I’m hoping the Echolight Scan can give me some assurance that the situation is not as bad as the standard test suggests.

Maybe REMS or echo light?

It's called Echolight REMS. There's an excellent discussion about it with Susan Brown on youtube:

Watch this for extensive info on Echolight

REMS echolight is an ultrasound that measures density and fragility of bones. I had a scan in Vancouver BC. You can get info at buddy@bonehealthscan.ca
