Groin pain, surprisingly, is a classic symptom of hips that need replacement. You need a thorough evaluation by a doctor of PT, but I suspect you need at least one new hip. If it's any consolation, my friends who had had both find the hip recovery easier. The fact that you have stayed in shape will make recovery easier.
What does the ortho recommend?

My orthopedic surgeon only told me that the hips were in bad shape. He didn’t suggest surgery to me as of yet. If the groin pain becomes chronic, I will have to make an app’t with him.

Thanks Sue. I think I'm pretty knowledgeable about my body and its mechanics - I've run a lot of marathons and have had just about every overuse injury possible. I also inherited osteoarthritis from my Mom....... and I've had both knees replaced as a result.

Anyway, I started experiencing groin pain about a year ago. I couldn't figure it out, and neither could my trainer. For the longest time I thought it was a groin strain.

10 months later, and after X-rays, I'm told by a very knowledgeable Dr that this pain is due to a very arthritic hip and I need a replacement. I was just stunned until the Dr correctly pointed out that the actual hip joint, the ball and socket, lie directly under the groin.

I'm getting the hip replaced next month. It can't come soon enough!
