Ongoing chronic groin pain

Posted by joefrench @joefrench, Jan 7 1:57pm

In 2014, I saw my primary doctor about a pain I was experiencing in my right groin. The doctor referred me to an Orthopedic doctor, who told me that I had to have my right hip replaced. X-rays showed moderate arthritis in the hip. The hip was replaced, but the groin pain is still there. I have gone to PT, and the exercises I was given made the pain worse. The medical facility that took out my hip has given me five cortisone injections in the groin area, and none of them worked. I would appreciate any advice offered. Thanks. Joe Galiardi

@ams

I had a medial branch nerve block (nerve ablation) April of 2023 in my lumber spine and I am still pain free. I will do it again when or if the pain comes back. An anesthesiologist did the procedure. I don't know if this gives you any more information in what you are doing.

I will ask my dr on Monday at my appointment, thank you for sharing!

I started that journey after I had emergency gallbladder surgery March 2023, apparently they didn’t pay attention to my medical history while moving me into position when my gallbladder was removed. Placed me in a position where I was not properly elevated to support the hardware in place. I woke up with such severe pain in my groin I couldn’t get out of the hospital bed. Turns out I now have a hip labrum tear. Went into surgery no pain in my groin to wake up to not being able to get out of bed. (I almost fell but my nurse caught me!!!)
To make matters worse I now need to have a fusion in my SI joint left side. When everything doesn’t alone the next in line hours haywire…
A bit of backstory of my past spinal surgeries… (yes multiple) I have had 7 previous surgeries from laminectomies to spinal fusion with hardware from T2 to L5/S1. Fall at work on a cement floor was where this all started 2014.
My insurance refused to agree with my surgeon regarding the SI joint fusion portion he wanted to include with my last surgery in 2021. He told them with my history it was medically necessary but the pier to pier didn’t go in my favor
With the hardware he was already placing in my back he knew that would need support at the SI joint. (Back history on SI right side fusion was done with my 5th surgery nothing done to right side due to stupid insurance policies
Unfortunately because of the damage in my spine that fusion was a failure aka the screw broke and had to be removed 6 months later. I’m still waiting to see if it’s been recalled because yes that is a thing with hardware😳
I’ve had PT, injections, pain management etc..
I’ve seen a hip orthopedic doctor, everything possible to avoid another surgery. Fast forward to surgery day January 5th 2024 and I arrive to find out surgery is canceled because my last MRI was now 10 months old any insurance required an MRI of lumbar spine within a 9 month timeframe. Because it is now January and I start my deductible AGAIN I will have to pay for an unnecessary MRI as my surgeon says because we’ve already determined it is the SI joint causing the pain waste of $1165
So to finish up, I had injection in the SI joint with immediate relief afterwards, that lasted 4 days. Proof positive that my SI joint was the cause of the majority of my groin pain.
I cannot lie down for more than an hour
AND FOR ME ICE IS MY VERY BEST FRIEND, NUMBS ME UP ENOUGH TO GET MOVING AROUND & THEN I CAN FUNCTION SOMEWHAT!
(Labrum is on the mend with steroid injections so I do not currently need to have surgery on that!)
Long story but felt necessary to give most information possible!

After trying to message you a long message and struggling staying awake I accidentally deleted what I was typing ( so frustrating) . I was accidentally twisted while setting down 3 weeks after my surgery. Fast forward 9 months still in pain . I’ve seen 3 surgeon’s that say everything is healed get a pain stimulator. The testicle and anal pain is worse, my urologist referred me to a pelvic therapist ( there’s not many For men) and she said my tailbone was bent. After trying the foam roller exercise at home it made the nerve pain worse right away. You might ask about yours. Best of luck praying all our pains go away.

I sometimes think I'm bad off, but listening to some of your stories I don't think I am. I've had a neck fusion which was successful and about a year later in the early 2000, I had 2 lower back fusions which were not. So I've been living with chronic pain since then. You can't sit, stand, walk for long periods. I would lay on my sofa and that's what I meant about my Sharpeis. They would come over and lay next to me and put their head on the sofa and look up at me. They knew I didn't feel well. They got me through a lot.
For the pain I've been on FENTANYL &Hydrocodone and sometimes these make me feel I could climb the walls so they put me on Alprazolam.
Now I have pain that I never knew I ever would experience in my groin area, hip thigh, knee, all the way to my foot that I can't even put pressure on the footto walk. So I've been bed ridden for about 2 months. I went to the Dr. That did both of my knee replacements and he took x rays and said it's not my hip, it's coming from my back so he referred me to a spinal surgeon and he took x rays and mri and said it didn't look like it was coming from my back but he set me up to get a special injection. They said give it 2 weeks. It took about 70%of pain off my foot. When I went to my pain management Dr. She set mee up to get a steroid injection. Didn't work at all. When I went back to my spine Dr. He said it must be my hip so now I'm set up for a hip injection at the end of this month.
It hard to walk, sleep. Can't do anything. My husband is my caregiver and he has a heart problem. I don't know if anyone else feels the way I do but he would be better off without me. He at least could have a life.
I'm so sorry for complaining. Thanks for your shoulder.

Hi Joe,
I sympathize with you because I've been suffering with severe groin pain, hip. I'm going for a hip injection at the end of this month and I'll see if it takes away the groin pain.
My pain started in the groin area and went down my right leg and then I got hip pain along with severe foot pain that I couldn't put any pressure on my leg.
I'll see if I can help after my next injection.
Hope your pain gets better or goes away. I'll keep you in my prayers
Linda

I just sent an email to my primary doctor at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto requesting that I see a doctor about my ongoing right groin pain. I've had it for years. Kaiser tried giving me five cortisone injections in the right groin, and none of them helped. There's got to be an answer to why I have pain in my right groin every time I get up from a chair or try getting out of my car. I am 89, and I don't want to live the rest of my life with this burden. It's bad enough that I have peripheral neuropathy in both feet. I need a break. Joe Galiardi, Cupertino, CA

I finally got someone to order an MRI of my hip and finally found the answer for me.

I have two labrum tears.
Labrum tear surgery is tough but done on younger athletes who they don't want to do a total hip on as they'd have to replace it too many times.
Me? 69.5, heading to quickly to 70! I'm hoping for the total hip as that will take care of the misshapen ball/arthritis of my hip that has been 5 months after my fall and my hip has been bone on bone and just finally getting a dr to take my pain seriously. Best of luck. But torn labrum can be worth investigating.
