Fat Pad Heel Syndrome

Posted by Soledad02 @soledad02, Jan 7 2:08pm

I was recently diagnosed with Fat Pad Heel Syndrome by my podiatrist. He advised me to start using cushioned heel cup inserts over my custom orthotics that he had made for me. The heel cup helps some but have very little fat over the calcaneus (heel bone) which bothers me, especially at night as I sleep on my back. I developed a painful corn on the back heel bone also. I’ve started putting bandages over my heel bone and wearing socks to bed at night. I have an upcoming appt with my podiatrist to discuss getting an injection in my heels. I am about 15 lbs heavier than I’d like to be, this could be one of the causes. Anyone else have or has had this issue?

I have fat pad atrophy on the bottom of my feet, but not the heels. I must always wear shoes and ensure there is sufficient padding under them. I think the heel is a more sensitive location, though. I’ve recently lost some weight, but I can’t say I’ve noticed it helps with that. I guess less weight will make a difference.

I asked one podiatrist about getting fat injected into my pads, but one said it wasn’t possible. I had read it was possible…so, IDK…..no podiatrist has recommended it to me.

Did they say what kind of injection?

No but it’s suppose to be for my atrophy. I read about the fat being removed from another area and injected to the feet as well. I doubt my doctor does that. Also read that this is not reversible 🙁. Will post an update after my appt.

I wonder if he wants to do a cortisone injection for the pain. Please post update when you find out. I hope they are able to help you.

Celia16 I saw my podiatrist yesterday. I was doing to discuss getting a shot since he told me I had fat pad syndrome last visit. He looked at my left foot as I've been having more pain in that foot. He pressed in a few areas and then told me I don't have fat pad syndrome I have tendonitis in my heel. Very painful to touch. He made an adjustment to my new orthotics and added a small wedge in the bottom of the heel. Also he wants me to purchase heel cushion inserts similar to Spenco.
Very relieved my diagnosed was reevaluated to tendonitis.

Good luck with your ongoing treatment and hoping you can find a doctor that will help you to a painfree resolution.

Excellent! What great news. Still, you have an issue, but it seems treatable. I hope this will help with your pain.

Is that related to your foot pain? Most therapists I have seen said my back caused most of my pain, whether it was in my hip or leg.

I had sciatica once that I’m aware of and my doctor showed me some stretches that were quite helpful. I hope you can get some help.

I’ve been doing stretches daily since this started as I had bursitis in both hips at separate times just prior to this issue. No correlation with my feet.
