Exercising with Osteoporosis

Posted by penk0213 @penk0213, Jan 29, 2023

I fractured the L3. It has healed and I just began Forteo injections. Not really getting any concrete advice from my Dr or Physical Therapist.

Good evening @penk0213, and a heartfelt welcome to Connect. Your message says you are not getting concrete advice from your Dr or PT. Are you wanting to have some exercise options presented to you that will support your Osteoporosis?

In order to share appropriately, will you please tell me your age and some idea of your health condition? What exercises have you been performing? Do you do some programmed Yoga stretches? How about exercises for stability and balance?

And here's another question I have for you. How are you doing with the Forteo injections? No side effects?

May you be safe, protected and free of inner and outer harm.

I’m 79 and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis in my lumbar spine. I am fairly active in the summer but sedentary in the winter which is long here at 9214 ft in Colorado. I am currently on no drugs. I am going to PT at this time.

Good morning and thanks for your reply. 9214 ft. Wow. I live in MN on the Mississippi River which can get pretty frozen, Was your diagnosis based on a DEXA scan? Does that mean your legs, hands, and other test areas did not reveal osteoporosis? Do you have an endocrinologist or other medical professional? If so, what recommendations have they mentioned? How is your PT going? Do you do any stretch Yoga?

When you say that you are not currently on any medication, have you been at any time? What information are you seeking to manage your condition and protect or grow your bone?

May you be safe, protected and free of inner and outer harm.

I have osteopenia in my hips neck and thoracic spine. I had a DEX scan mid December. I am working with a Physical Therapist. I am going to consult with my general practitioner about what the next step should be.

I have researching osteoporosis treatments on the internet at this time. I have incorporated climbing 100 steps a day as my weight bearing exercise.

No, I am not doing any stretch yoga.

I have osteoporosis in my spine as well. After implementing some exercises to stress the bones and adding bone building supplements in addition to continuing with a good absorbable calcium and ultra k2 + d, my last dexscan showed no significant changes. That was a win in my opinion and I hope my scan will show improvement.
I would strongly suggest you not become sedentary during the winter. It's critical to continue with exercises that build bone and do them regularly, not just once a week. There are plenty of bone building exercises you can do at home. Look up Margaret Martin or Dr. Fishman - both have exercises that can be done at home.
One thing I did was purchase ankle weights to increase the load since I am a small woman. I also have dumbbells ranging from 3 to 10 lbs. to add upper weight. I do these on days I do not play tennis or weather doesn't permit outdoor activities. If you live somewhere where you can access stairs, going up and down stairs is also great exercise - anything that is weight bearing.
Best to you!

Thanks for your reply. I have already incorporated stair climbing in my exercise program. I climb 100 steps a day. I have watched several of Margret Martin’s videos.
