Ongoing chronic groin pain

Posted by joefrench @joefrench, Jan 7 1:57pm

In 2014, I saw my primary doctor about a pain I was experiencing in my right groin. The doctor referred me to an Orthopedic doctor, who told me that I had to have my right hip replaced. X-rays showed moderate arthritis in the hip. The hip was replaced, but the groin pain is still there. I have gone to PT, and the exercises I was given made the pain worse. The medical facility that took out my hip has given me five cortisone injections in the groin area, and none of them worked. I would appreciate any advice offered. Thanks. Joe Galiardi

Mary Ann,
I have had acute groin pain in my right side for over ten years. X-rays showed I had moderate arthritis in the hip. The doctor told me that I had to have my right hip replaced. A second opinion conferred the same. I had the hip replaced. The operation didn't do me any good. Don't believe all doctors. I suggest going on Utube and looking up exercises for groin pain. I just started, and I believe in time my groin pain will elapse. Joe G

Hi Joe,
Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely take your advice and search YouTube for some exercises. MaryAnn from MA

Since you started new exercises it may be the cause. I found it helped to use
ice packs and take ibuprofen. Avoid the exercises for now. Maybe it was a
a muscle pull or cramp. If it persists hope you have access to an ortho.
X-rays don’t always reveal the cause. I now know to seek a second opinion
before any surgery.

Thanks very much for your great advice! I am hoping that it was from the exercises. It is still sore but I am using Ibuprofen and hoping that it just goes away.

I developed right groin pain after doing some work involving a wheelbarrow, a load of clay dirt, and a ramp. Doc said I had an inguinal hernia so that was fixed. However, the pain did not go away. The only way for relief was to sit! For 20 years I had the pain, I called it my "string" because it felt like a string was wrapped around my hip bone and connected to my groin. Then, 20 years later, I had a hysterectomy. Groin pain gone. No explanation.

Thanks very much on your advice on sitting. I am on my feet a lot when cooking in the kitchen (like now!) and I just sat down and put my feet up. It does give me some relief! Glad that your pain is now gone!

And the best 'sit' was riding. not driving, jn a car. Although at the end of the ride it was a "pain" getting out of the car.

It could be SI joint dysfunction. I have it .. three doctors say.

I have hip pain, thigh pain, groin pain, and leg pain (down to about the back of my knee).

Injections did not help. I had a piece of bone fused in .. but it did not help. I did PT with little relief. A TENS unit helps the most. I bought one for home use.

Prolonged standing or sitting aggravates the joint. Doing movements such as with doing the laundry and vacuuming floors really sets the pain off.

I make sure I get up from sitting every hour. I avoid prolong standing. I usually get up during the night and walk a few minutes .. just long enough to let my mini-poodle out. Too long and I can’t get back to sleep. I try not to overdo in doing housework. Rest between chores or not do laundry and floors in same day.

Mine isn't that bad. It's a re-occurring groin pain that only acts up every so often...so I'm very grateful for that.

I went to see a new pain management Dr and she had me bend over to see if I could touch the floor. I've had a neck fashion and 2 backs and I need another back surgery but I've refused b cause the backs haven't been successful. So I've become living with pain seeing pain Dr, getting shots, I'm sure you've gone thru it yourselves, but I needed to tell this to get to my point.
I went to my pain management Dr and she had me bend over to see how far I could touch the floor and the next day I woke up with severe groin pain and everyday gradually got worse that the pain spread to my hip thigh down my leg to my knee and my foot. It felt like I broke my foot. I thought I needed a hip replacement. So I went to see my orthopedic surgeon who did my knees and he told me it was coming from my spine so he is sending me to a spine surgeon.... which I am dreading. I am just thinking another back surgery.
Hang in there guys and I'll keep you in my prayers. I'll advise on what I find out and thanks for helping me find your info so I can start understanding some of this new pain. Right now I'm on steroids for inflammation but I still am left with the real pain..
Thanks for listening, Linda

I've also had several SI joint, L4/L5 and L5/SI and trigger point injections. Each has helped for a while, however right now the pain comes when i walk too long, get up and try to move initially, down my leg front and sice, groin, etc.

My next steps are a second lumbar facet block then if I still get the relief I got with the first one Monday of this week, an ablation.

These issues are not fun!

I started that journey after I had emergency gallbladder surgery March 2023, apparently they didn’t pay attention to my medical history while moving me into position when my gallbladder was removed. Placed me in a position where I was not properly elevated to support the hardware in place. I woke up with such severe pain in my groin I couldn’t get out of the hospital bed. Turns out I now have a hip labrum tear. Went into surgery no pain in my groin to wake up to not being able to get out of bed. (I almost fell but my nurse caught me!!!)
To make matters worse I now need to have a fusion in my SI joint left side. When everything doesn’t alone the next in line hours haywire…
A bit of backstory of my past spinal surgeries… (yes multiple) I have had 7 previous surgeries from laminectomies to spinal fusion with hardware from T2 to L5/S1. Fall at work on a cement floor was where this all started 2014.
My insurance refused to agree with my surgeon regarding the SI joint fusion portion he wanted to include with my last surgery in 2021. He told them with my history it was medically necessary but the pier to pier didn’t go in my favor
With the hardware he was already placing in my back he knew that would need support at the SI joint. (Back history on SI right side fusion was done with my 5th surgery nothing done to right side due to stupid insurance policies
Unfortunately because of the damage in my spine that fusion was a failure aka the screw broke and had to be removed 6 months later. I’m still waiting to see if it’s been recalled because yes that is a thing with hardware😳
I’ve had PT, injections, pain management etc..
I’ve seen a hip orthopedic doctor, everything possible to avoid another surgery. Fast forward to surgery day January 5th 2024 and I arrive to find out surgery is canceled because my last MRI was now 10 months old any insurance required an MRI of lumbar spine within a 9 month timeframe. Because it is now January and I start my deductible AGAIN I will have to pay for an unnecessary MRI as my surgeon says because we’ve already determined it is the SI joint causing the pain waste of $1165
So to finish up, I had injection in the SI joint with immediate relief afterwards, that lasted 4 days. Proof positive that my SI joint was the cause of the majority of my groin pain.
I cannot lie down for more than an hour
AND FOR ME ICE IS MY VERY BEST FRIEND, NUMBS ME UP ENOUGH TO GET MOVING AROUND & THEN I CAN FUNCTION SOMEWHAT!
(Labrum is on the mend with steroid injections so I do not currently need to have surgery on that!)
Long story but felt necessary to give most information possible!

I had a medial branch nerve block (nerve ablation) April of 2023 in my lumber spine and I am still pain free. I will do it again when or if the pain comes back. An anesthesiologist did the procedure. I don't know if this gives you any more information in what you are doing.
