Physical Activity - How to Keep on Keeping On?

The constantly changing and startling news cycle is elevating stress levels. Being confined to home is reducing physical activity options for most of us (pick me).

Physical activity is one of the all time best stress relievers and been shown to be super important for brain recovery and brain health. Some members in the group likely have injury residuals which complicates the picture. And to top it off, Spring fever is here.

I'm wondering what creative solutions you've come up with to stay as active as possible, moving around, getting your heart rate up, and burning off steam?

I’ve always walked for exercise. Pre-TBI I was walking 2 miles each day. And much faster than I can now. My steering is a problem, I veer from right to left. I worry about people behind me being confused by my unpredictable movement and causing a collision. When I got the virus 🦠, I had no spare energy, as going to the bathroom or getting food wore me out. I think I’m getting better, and had used masks before when flying, ( every time I flew anywhere I ended up sick at my destination. ) So it doesn’t feel weird to wear a mask. I have several cloth ones, and as a good 3Mer, have a fairly good supply of single use masks. I wear the single use masks when I clean litter boxes. And wear gloves for that as well as for dusting. I’m sure I’ll be brave enough to head out walking again, but the malls are out. Off to explore my very quiet and historic neighborhood again!

@mugglemary I'm glad to hear that you neighborhood is quiet and that you can go for walks and remain safely distant from others.

How is everyone managing to keep up their physical activity during the stay home directives due to COVID-19? How have you had to modify your exercise regime? What are you doing differently now?

I'm not one who exercises for the sake of exercise, I was raised on a small farm in a big family. If you had energy, there was work to do, so my mental bend is that I need to be accomplishing something.
This winter I replaced a shower in our master bath, repaired four snowmobiles, rebuilt a snowblower, split and hauled wood, kept the driveway clean, reorganized my garage/workshop and more that I can't remember. Physical activity is not an issue for me, sitting still is. I had a stitch from a previous surgery let go about three years ago, had it fixed and had to "do nothing" for six weeks. That was the hardest job I have ever had.
Right now it is a little slow because of snow melt, but I have two snowmobile trailer torn apart in my driveway, waiting for parts. Soon I will be able to start gardening and I have a stone retaining wall that I have to finish in my yard.

Exercising: yesterday I walked around the lake and it’s a mile plus route. I started out strolling and ended up barely able to put one foot in front of the other. It was a beautiful day, lots of people there. I noted a pair of ladies without masks sitting 6 feet away from each other on a stone wall while they talked. Will try again after my back stops aching.

I have had a Peloton stationary bike since shortly after my accident and I have been using it for 30-45 minutes almost every day. It's quite a workout! Over the past week or so I have added in a one mile evening walk. But other than that I am hardly doing a thing.

I wasn’t sure of which thread to put this on. It involves me doing some muscle exercises. Yesterday I was able to return to Physical Therapy, and get some input into the recurrence of some of my unsteadiness and dizziness. There are a group of neck muscles that haven’t been working well since I fell, so now I know the cause and how to work toward easing some of my pain. I plan to go back weekly if I can.

Oh, and, P.S., Someone stole my bike from a locked storage room. Brand new Turquoise beach cruiser, not assembled, with loose seat and handlebars, and flat tires. I had gotten it just before my fall, and had just recently thought I could see how my balance was on that. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise. Maybe my biking days are over. I’m so angry.

I have had a tbi since March 23 1990. I'm left side hemiplegic and wheelchair bound. I have massive amounts of hobbies from physically going out and wheelchairing around my town and close by. I live on the top of a hill so once I leave the flatness it's a great workout going up and down several blocks from my town -avenue. Just keep that blood flowing. I also find activities to get me out like flea markets, shopping..

I know a senior with broken neck issues who uses a cane, boy can he move fast when he wants, he's unfortunately homeless too and spends lots of time on benches with his bags which hinder his activity. Most of his bags are comfort items rather than necessities also. Be grateful for your mobility and good mental health.
