Purna Kashyap, MBBS, discusses more about how the microbiome influences an individual's health as a whole after his interview on NPR. What is the connection between the microbiome and inflammatory bowel disease? Dr. Kashyap explains that, "Inflammatory bowel disease has been associated with alterations in both composition and function of the gut bacteria suggesting that gut microbes may in fact play a role in the pathogenesis of IBD in genetically susceptible host. This has led to significant interest in the role of environmental factors such as diet which has profound effects on the gut bacteria and hence may play a role in IBD."
