Differences in Immunological Effects of Vitamin D Replacement Among African American Prostate Cancer Patients With Localized Versus Metastatic Disease

About this study

The aims of this study are to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency among B/AA prostate cancer patients and to determine the deficits in immunity associated with vitamin D insufficiency. Also, we will evaluate whether the peripheral blood immune cell function is different in B/AA prostate cancer patients with metastatic disease as compared with those with localized disease.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. Inclusion Criteria:

  • African American males.
  • Age ≥ 18 years.
  • Patients with a previous history of localized or locally recurrent metastatic prostate cancer.
  • Willing to travel to Mayo Clinic for baseline and 8 weeks visit for blood collection, if eligible.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Known hypersensitivity to vitamin D.
  • End stage renal failure on dialysis.
  • Liver cirrhosis.
  • Currently taking a vitamin D or multivitamin supplement, that has more than 400 IU/10mcg of vitamin D daily for the past month.
  • Legal inability or restricted legal ability, medical or psychological conditions not allowing proper study completion or informed consent signature.

Understanding the Challenges, Behavioral Patterns, and Preferences Towards Participation in Clinical Trials in Minority Patient Populations

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the challenges, behavioral patterns, and preferences of minority patient participation in clinical trials. Also, to develop and validate a personalized clinical trial educational platform to boost participation among underserved cancer patients.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Subjects must be adults with age ≥ 18 years at the time of study entry.
  • Subjects with any cancer diagnosis may be included.
  • Subjects must be identified as new patients to hematology oncology at Mayo Clinic Florida, Arizona, Rochester, and Mayo Clinic Cancer Center at St. Vincent’s.
  • Subjects must be willing to provide informed consent for the study.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Patients reported to have an estimated life-expectancy of  < 6 months, as assessed by their clinician.
  • Patients not willing to complete the Clinical Trials Study survey.

A Study of Prostate Cancer Care and Survivorship Among Sub-Saharan African Immigrant Impacted by Social Determinants of Migrant Health Factors

About this study

The primary objective of this study is to employ the social determinant of migrant health framework (International Organization for Migration, n.d.) to examine the impact of immigration on the health-seeking behaviors of Sub-Saharan African Immigrant (SSAI) including informed-decision making, psychosocial effects and coping mechanisms.

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult men originally from each of these geographic regions (East, West, Central, and Southern Africa) and have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • Able to provide oral consent and conduct an interview.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients below the age of 18.
  • Patients not belonging to any of four regions.
