Has anyone tried Black Cohosh to relieve hot flash symptoms? My oncologist recommended using it.

I had a mastectomy about ten years ago, but still get pain where there no longer is a breast. Is that normal? Sometimes, there is sharp pain in the remaining breast. Really odd. Had mammogram last week and was told my breast is dense. What does that mean?

Hello Maxine!
Congratulations on reaching ten years out since your mastectomy. We share a similar history.
Did you tell your oncologist about your stabbing pain? Perhaps ask if it is also lymphedema, neuropathy or something else to ease your concerns?
This may or may not apply to you: I checked out this online from the National Institute of Health. They said 20 to 50% report various persistent pain post mastectomy (varies due to definitions.)

Persistent Post-Mastectomy Pain: Common Characteristics
Element Characteristics

Distribution -
Axilla, breast/chest wall, medial upper extremity

Descriptors -
Shooting, stabbing, pulling, tight, burning, aching

Exacerbating factors- Movement, straining, overhead activity, cold weather

Potential mechanisms- Neuropathy, lymphedema, neuromuscular, mechanical

Comorbidities-
Disability, quality of life, emotional distress

I think it's called ghost pain. I read before about someone who had either their arm or leg amputated and experienced pain in the limb that was no longer there. As far as I remember the person then took medication for that particular type of pain.

Maybe you need an ultrasound of the breast. I have dense breasts and ultrasounds were recommended for visualizing any abnormalities.
