You probably know this but in case you don't I'm going to state it. The drug lamictal is the brand name or lamotrigine is the generic which is used to treat epilepsy is the safest drug, but it's side effect for the baby is being born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. The child has to go through surgery to fix it. I was blessed that it didn't happen to me
I had a cleft palate at birth due to Stickler Syndrome, which is a connective tissue disorder and is genetic..Had surgery at 4 yrs. old to repair it..it was in the roof of my mouth..surgery was successful..I do have a nasal sound at times to my voice..had no complications from surgery..

My questions:
1. What are your pre-surgical methods and why are these your preference over other methods?
2. What commitment does your #1 pre-surgical method require in terms of appointments leading up to surgery?
3. What factors determine the age of cleft lip and palate repair?
4. How many cleft repairs are done each year at Mayo?
5. Is research active in looking at new, more effective and convenient options for cleft lip and palate? If so, are you practicing these innovative methods as of yet?
6. After cleft repair, what are your next steps in looking after the care and development of the child?
