I have PBC & PSC. My meld is a 10, but I also have HE. Why do I have to get worse before a transplant? Why can't I get a partial liver from a living donor?

For people living out of the United States, going to Mayo Clinic for transplantation, it is required living liver donor?,

Rene,

No, a living donor is not required for any of our patients. American and international patients are all put on the same list for liver transplantation. Here is some information about living liver donation: http://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/transplant-center/liver-transplant/choosing-mayo-clinic/expertise-innovation-research/living-donor.

Dear Md Shawn Bishop, my question basically was, if MELD value today is the same than 4 years ago = 16, it means that the liver functions did not deteriorated much? thanks !!!

Rene,

That is correct. Based on the MELD calculation, liver function did not deteriorate much. However, there could be other clinical signs of deterioration.

I am not overweight and have been diagnosed with early stages of fatty liver disease. What can I do to help reduce the infiltration of fat into the liver? I have four relatives, including my mother who have been diagnosed with NASH. Could it just be genetic? I went for testing to be a live liver donor for my mother and that is how they found it.
