My 3yo son has speech articulation difficulties, with parents and teachers understanding 50-60% of what he says. He was just evaluated through the school district and scored in the 5th percentile on the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation with 74 errors. Despite scoring in the fifth percentile, this was deemed "not educationally significant" since it was not 2 full standard deviations below the mean and no speech therapy was offered through the school district. Would you recommend any further evaluation or treatment at this time or do we just "wait and see" if his articulation improves with age? Is there potential harm in not starting speech therapy at this time? Thanks so much!

Can you share your thoughts on using basic signs ("more" "mine" "help" "please") to help with language development vs. taking a verbal approach? If the child is becoming more vocal, when should you stop working on signs and focus more on verbal skills instead?

Thank you for presenting my question to the speech pathologists. However, my question pertained to language difficulties, not articulation difficulties as was inaccurately portrayed.

@amstmons- in my opinion you should not accept their denial of services. Appeal, if that’s a possibility. This would be a good age to get help with articulation. Within 1-2 years he will be in a public school and most likely still have a problem which would interfere with learning. It could affect him socially too.
