I am trying to understand the increase in food allergies over the last 20 years. When I was a little girl, food allergies were rare. Is it the increased consumption of ultra processed food that has contributed to this problem?

My daughter was born with food allergies (peanuts, soy, egg, and milk), we found out at 6 months old, but has since outgrown eggs, soy, and milk, now at age 4, her peanut level still continues to rise. At age 3, she has a positive back skin test and blood levels read a 34, now at 4 years old back test is still positive and blood levels were a 100+…. what do the significance of these numbers mean? Is there a possibility she could still outgrow the peanut allergy? To this day, she has yet to ingest a peanut; we only know of the allergy because of the skin and blood tests that were results from the milk allergy. We’ve been told by our pediatric allergy specialist she is in the anaphylaxis range and we carry epi pens everywhere we are. We have no idea what her actual reaction is to a peanut, but we avoid them like the plague. How can I find out what results of 100+ means? At 6 months old when we introduced foods (along with continued nursing to 11 months of age) is when we found the food allergies. I avoided them for her to not get the allergen through breastmilk and we’ve been diligent about avoiding since then. I’m baffled why she outgrew the three others yet peanuts continues to rise, dispite never coming in contact with a peanut, peanut oil, pink peppercorn, etc.. should we be doing something in addition to avoiding to help the peanut allergy? What can we do different? Thank you!

Where do I find the live Q&A?

My daughter is on here so I won’t repeat too much. We are terrified with our 4 year old granddaughter’s most recent results for her PEANUT allergy which continues to rise and is now at 100+on the ratings scale according to her most recent blood test. I read where 1/44,000 of a kernel could cause anaphylaxis… a terrifying reality. We read every label, every processing location, cook at home, avoid eating out at restaurants, and make sue Epi-pens are current and always handy, etc. Besides keeping her totally isolated from the outside world, what else can we do to help protect her?
A couple other questions:
1. Since her rating scale went from +/- 35 to over 100 in one year, would you suggest re-testing or is an increase like this common? Will it likely go back down at some point?
2. Peanut dust and/or residue – In her case, what are the chances of “residue” or “dust” causing anaphylaxis?
3. This young lady lives on a ranch with livestock – a number of ranches feed Peanut Hay. Any chance of this causing a reaction? Does Peanut Hay actually have the same protein as regular peanuts?
4. What is the difference between Pink Peppercorn and peanut? We’ve heard that the proteins and reactions are similar. Would they cause anaphylaxis? And, as a general rule, spices are not individually labeled in products – how would we know what to look for?

What are your thoughts, on Mast Cell Activation Disorder? Do you find, or think those that have had some sort of immunotherapy before are more likely to develop new allergies? Or Less Likely?
