Expert answers: What is an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty procedure?

By Ellen Bissonette, RN, CBN, @ecb

Barham Abu Dayyeh, M.D., MPH, a Mayo Clinic expert in endoscopic weight loss procedures, recently shared more about this new weight loss procedure.

MC2589-34Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a newer type of weight-loss procedure. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty reduces the size of your stomach using an endoscopic suturing device without the need for surgery.

As the diagram at the right illustrates, a suturing device is interested into your stomach through your mouth and throat to perform the procedure without surgical incisions or scars.

Using the endoscope, the doctor places approximately 12 sutures in the stomach. The sutures change the structure of your stomach, leaving it shaped like a tube as shown in the photo below. This restricts the amount of calories your body absorbs.
