Correcting the record on CNN story

On Monday, CNN published a series involving a former patient titled Escape from the Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic publicly responded to the story labeling it as inaccurate and incomplete reporting. In a letter sent to CNN, Mayo Clinic points out the reporters disregarding and not investigating key facts including:

  • Allegation of the mother’s abuse of the patient
  • Mayo never denied a request from the family to transfer the patient to a different facility
  • The mother was removed from the hospital after exhibiting escalating disruptive and aggressive behavior

Read the full letter sent to CNN.

Recently Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) also reported on the story with additional facts and information pointing out inaccuracies and “red flags” when the mother had written to MPR in March of 2017 about doing a story about her daughter being “pushed out the door” of Mayo after their insurance changed.

Please help us correct the record by sharing the MPR story or the related Mayo Clinic posts below on your social media accounts.

I posted a comment on Facebook that said my husband and I had been Mayo patients for decades. Mayo Clinic saved my husband's life (three emergency surgeries for aortic dissection) and saved my life (early detection/surgery for uterine cancer). The CNN story is far afield from the excellent care we've received from Mayo Clinic over the years. We love Mayo Clinic and am dismayed by the lack of professionalism CNN has shown. What happened to ethics? What happened to fact checking? What happened to honesty?

This is part two of my post. My husband, a specialist in aerospace medicine, internal medicine, and occupational medicine, is a retired Mayo Clinic physician. I know Mayo Clinic as a physician's wife, patient, and grandmother of a junior student at The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. Generations of family members have worked at Mayo. My father-in-law was a staff physician, died at age 98 1/2 and had met Will and Charlie Mayo. Again, our experience is nothing like the CNN portrayal of Mayo Clinic.

More evidence of the fake news that President Trump talks about. He is not against the free press but that is another untrue story repeated by CNN.

In my career of flying for a commercial airline for 35 years and also being Government Affairs Chair there was a most valuable must do in my career: "Let the press be ******!" Do NOT Talk OPENLY about POLITICS! As a professional airline crew member and dedicated Mayo Clinic patient for over 40 years. Let's stick to medical questions and conversations, respectfully!
Thank you.

Congratulations and many many Thank You's to you and your entire family. Both my husband and I knew Dr Carter of the Mayo Aero Space Med program...and amazing physician and person. We used Star Doc on international and domestic flights when a passenger
became ill on flights and Mayo doctors were patched in to give us often life saving medical advice. We also know other wonderful
aero space medicine physicians at Mayo Clinic. We agree that our experience with Mayo Clinic is nothing like the CNN portrayal of Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic saved my life and my husbands life. We are forever supportive to the physicians and their amazing teams who dedicate their lives to save others. Bless you and thank you for sharing. With sincere gratitude to you for sharing your story.

My husband followed Dr. Carter and was the Medical Director of Northwest Airlines (part of his Mayo job) for many years. We were active in the Aerospace Medical Association and International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine.

The Mayo Clinic is doubtless the best purveyor of quality medical care, administered with compassion. I am 71 years old, and was a patient of O.E. Hallberg, M.D. when I was a frightened 10 year old, with even more frightened parents. Dr. Hallberg took me aside and showed me exactly what would be done. I was the patient. This CNN report is disappointing, and anyone who reads it should discount it. I pray I will not need medical intervention anytime soon, but I know my way to Mayo, and I continue to send friends there without hesitation.
