Why Weight Matters

Maintaining one's weight is important for everyone, not just cancer survivors. Excess weight not only can increase your risk of certain cancers such as breast, colon, uterine, kidney and esophageal, but can also make a difference in outcomes for cancer patients. Research continues to be done to examine the impact of weight in the development and recurrence of cancers, however it is known that that being overweight or obese can increase your risk for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and mobility problems.

As a cancer survivor, your weight may fluctuate — especially during treatment. Steroids, lack of sleep, and stress can all effect weight. It's advised to work with your healthcare team and wait until your treatment is complete before making any changes to lose or maintain weight.

If incorporating healthy habits has been prescribed to you, here are some helpful tips :

  • Be active every day — take a walk or try classes such as yoga or tai chi.
  • Make small changes in your diet — add more fruits and vegetables, choose healthy fats (omega-3 and olive oil), lean meats and whole grains.
  • Keep a journal of your activity and eating habits.
  • Find a friend who also wants to make healthy changes and do this together.
  • Set goals and track your progress.
  • Celebrate your achievements with something special just for you!

Losing, or even maintaining, weight requires constant vigilance. Surrounding yourself with a support network is important as is celebrating successes! Sometimes the hardest part is just making that first step. What has worked to motivate you to incorporate healthy changes?
