Hello,

No. I did not go to Mayo. I’m in the Chicago area. I was identified at Rush. My treatment began at Northwestern. I am now at Lutheran General.

The 3 you responded about were begun simultaneously (spelling?) with the actual treatment along with a script for anti nausea med. Thankfully that one has never been needed.

Hello Lorraine,

I also have multiple Myeloma (MM). Was identified 2 years ago. MM was my 2nd cancer. I vowed I’d be as informed as I possibly could before treatment began. For 2 weeks I Googled, learned foreign vocab, practiced saying these foreign medical words, learned about treatments , side effects, first course of meds and was even able to attend a support group for more insight.

The identifying test I had was blood work for Lambda and Kappas and then a full skeletal x ray. All classic MM
I began a treatment of Velcade (shot in office) and dexamethasone ((dex) (taken orally/pill form) weekly. I responded well cutting my #’s in 1/2. Treatment was changed after 2 months to Velcade and dex weekly AND Revlimid (Rev ) (taken orally/pill form)) 3 out of 4 weeks. I am currently doing the same and doing well.

There are also other meds you’re put on. One is a daily anti fungal, the other a daily anti bacterial, & weekly a bone strengthener FOSSOMAX. The first 2 protect you from any other illnesses that will interrupt treatment Fossomax, or its generic alendronate, is to keep the bones strong. I also take a calcium supplement. After 2 years my bone density is still normal & hasn’t deviated from 4 years ago. These 3 drugs are to be prescribed when treatment begins.
Please note if your reaction to DEX is overwhelming it can be divided over 2 or even 3 days.

Initially, a doc tried to convince me into a bone marrow transplant prior to beginning meds. I refused.

One more thing. It’s essential you consume only nutritionally dense foods & eliminate the rest. Whether its for MM or any other physical ailment, this will put your body at top fighting capacity, reduce inflammation & improve or stabilize your immune system.

Your test result should be back no later than weeks end.

You are the captain of your treatment and your doc is your co captain. When in doubt as to what your doc says, tell your doc you will go home to study and research what was proposed. Do so via google, phone calls to the Leukemia Society, the MM International foundation and through this forum.

Hello Ozys,

Glad to learn you are a planner. It is always better to be ahead of the game. Good for you. A year before I was identified with mm I was identified with breast cancer, I was a total basket case and did not begin any research till I was in radiation.. When I was told I had mm, I did get a bit upset, just a little
B I T (ha). I began immediately reading, learning the language/terms, contacting Mayo, Dana Farber and MD Anderson with questions and finding a support group. Within 3 weeks I was making demands to begin treatment and requesting tests on top of what the doc was ordering. I could not let what happened to me with the breast happen with mm.

For the past 11 months, I have been a hair’s breath from remission. But even when that happens, I haVE DECIDED to continue with chemo.

It is wonderful your husband has you.

Hello Ozys,

I take velcade weekly at the hospital . Injection/shot in the hip alternating sides each week. First I do labs. If labs are good, then velcade. Then once a month I do major labs consisting of 4-5 tubes of blood. Whose counting. + a 24 hour urine. The monthly labs include lambda and kappa #’s. Others I know do Velcade every other week.

I have been doing this for 1 1/2 years.

Can I ask why he needs meat? Is it for the protein?

I read many books on good eating for cancer patients and then went to books on healthy eating for heart patients.
Everyone resulted with PLANT BASED eating. I took from the readings what I found palatable. For every new food I added, I removed one bad food, It took a month before I made a complete overhaul of my eating patterns.

I eat a can of sardines each morning = 23-25 grams of protein.( p.s. not packed in water but oil) Yuck to sardines? Go for a small can of tuna or salmon. Super protein kick starter for the day. seeds, nuts and beans are loaded with protein, also.

Greek yogurt has 12-15 grams of protein. Mix in fruits of choice, etc. Check the protein count on the label.

I eat chia, flax and hemp and sprinkled into almost everything I eat daily, including salads, soups, guacamole dip. Almost everything .

Quinoa and Ferro are a wonderful substitute for rice.

HEALTHY fats are great. I eat at least 3 avacados a week. Either in a salad or as a guacamole dip or right from its shell/skin.

Bottom line, I lost 30 pounds the first 3 months and had no idea how. All I knew I was changing my eating lifestyle for my health. I was stuffing myself like a piggy and was never hungry. And yet the weight was falling off. It is the combination of all these foods. All those seeds ‘beating’ each other up internally. And this was without exercise.

Further get rid of the carbs. I eliminated all breads and pasta. I eat sprouted bread made by Ezekial . I eat Lundberg rice cakes as a substitute for crackers..

To date I am down 49 pounds and have kept it off for 2 1/2 years. It works.

I also found that changing my eating lifestyle was something where I had complete control. .
