Apr 16, 2016 · Possible cervical osteophytes, paralyzed vocal cord in Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)

She had a thyroidectomy d/t congenital hypothyroidism and a tsh in the 800’s. She had complications from the surgery that caused both vocal cord to be paralyzed shut. They had to trach her to give her an airway. We had tried having them injected with no success. Then she had a phrenic nerve graft which helped a little. She chose to have one surgically removed to get the trach out. This all started when she was 15. She had her trach for five years.

My daughter had one vocal cord cut out. She can still talk but can’t control the volume of her voice. Her airway is tiny since they took out her trach. They have to use a size 5 ET tube on her. She just made the decision to have part of her other vocal cord cut out to give make it easier to breath.

I agree! You need to be your own advocate. Get a second opinion and don’t tell them what the first MD said. I am in the medical field and have found that it doesn’t hurt thier feelings! Besides, it is your health at stake, not thiers!

HI, I am a RN and a mother of a child with Hoshimoto’s thyroiditis. Those symptoms are classic of hypothyroidism. Easily treated with medication. See a doctor and have your TSH, T3 and free T4 checked. The nodules and enlarged thyroid should be watched. Even if it isn’t cancer it can cause breathing problems and swallowing problems. But be sure to have those lab tests done. My daughter would almost be comatose when her levels were off and then normal when they were ok.. She has had major complications, so find a good MD.

My daughter, who just turned 18, has bilateral vocal cord paralysis that required her to get a tracheostomy to beath. It is a complication from having her thyroid removed a year ago. She is having a nerve reinervation surgery on Nov 9. Hopefully this will allow her to have her trach removed. The surgeon said we would know if it worked within a year. I am an ondology and hospice nurse, and am terrified of making the wrong desicion of which surgery to have done. Thier is a new procedure where they implant a pacemaker into the vocal cords but it won’t be approved by the FDA until the first of the year. Anyone out there have any experience with the nerve surgery? Or help on how to deal with an angry, scared girl who people stare at constantly?
