May 27, 2015 · Difficulty initiating swallow in Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)

Hi-Haven’t been on this blog for awhile but your comments on your brother’s condition popped up on my Email. I’m on oral cancer #3 and declined further radiation 1/2014 at Mayo because more damage wasn’t what I needed. Finally lost my swallow completely after many lung infections/pneumonia from ingested food. and now feed by G-tube. I must have missed something but how did your brother have a “spot on his lung”, and the radiation treatment for it “burned his throat”? I know radiation has a field of effect, but that’s quite a stretch. The only thing I can offer is that i have been tube fed for 18 months now, and the only problem is I keep GAINING weight. If your brother has access to a good nutritionist, perhaps they could find a liquid supplement that he could keep down. When I declined further radiation, they gave me 3-5 months and I’m still here, so you and your Bro hang in there.

My swallowing issues are to the point where I will probably have to have a stomach feeding tube to survive. Oral cancer of the tongue twice (1998&2010), loss of my right mandible, numerous surgeries, and radiation treatments have left me with a painful neck and throat that feels like petrified wood, a larynx/epiglottis that won’t block my airway when I swallow, and chronic pneumonia from food/bacteria entering my lungs. I go to Mayo Jax for ENT cancer follow-ups, pulmonary etc., and receive xcellent care. No knowing what causes your swallowing problems, I can’t advise you, but I’m sure Mayo can. I have had 2 swallow studies done there where you swallow barium liquid and other food consistencies, and they watch your swallow mechanisms on ultrasound then render an evaluation. You may already be familiar with that. Mayo always seems up on the latest techniques and procedures so, if you have access, I highly recommend them. Good luck!
