May 28, 2012 · How does your depression make you feel in Depression & Anxiety

Life gets me down from time to time but never for long, however, after my first child was born i am certain I had post partum depression for about a week. This Depression was very different and strange as it seemed to come from with in not from anything in my environment. I was happy about the baby and couldn’t mesh how I was feeling with what was happening in my life. It was weird and made me want to jump out of my skin and get away from it, but I couldn’t. It went away on it’s own. Years later when my daughter turned 15 she came to me and told me she thought she was depressed. She too expressed that there was no reason for it she just couldn’t enjoy anything going on around her and felt like she wanted to kill herself. It also made her angry frustrated and she didn’t always process information correctly when she would get upset. I spent many a day thinking she needed tougher discipline when in fact she was sick. She now has it under control with Lexipro. She is 100% well on the meds. I also think that you can be depressed by getting stuck in a bad situation in life that you just can’t shake. A depression from bad things in your environment. How do you feel, do you think there are two kinds of depression, one from within and one from the environment. When I read about this illness and talk to doctors i don’t seem to hear anyone who understands it like my daughter and I experienced it. They always seem to mesh the depression with the environment. Which may very well be the case for many people. I am actively trying to understand this illness that many in my family have been afflicted with and welcome the discussion.

Good for you to find something that works. Sometimes it takes thinking outside the box!!

It is not a copout for you to find treatment that serves you best. It is a copout for the medical profession to continue to settle into a treatment that is not 100% efective ECT does not work for many people. The medical community could not save or help my mother, who I watched suffer all my life. My comment was not made for you the individual it was more about my impatients with the medical profession for not understanding more and doing more about mental illness. I am skeptical that newer better things can’t be done. I’m not talking about the personal cause of your own issues I am talking about doing more to understand the science of the brain.

I am skeptical, it makes no sense to me that random burning and killing off of brain cells will fix the physiological structures in the brain that were malfunctioning to cause the depression in the first place. The brain is complicated, we need more research to get to the root of the cause of chronic depression. Resorting to failed 1960’s treatments seems like a copout to me. ECT didn’t work for my mother during the dark ages of the mental health industry, why go backwards. There has to be something better.

Been through that kind of thing. There is only one way to deal with this, and that is you must stay away. If you can’t stay away because they are family, you must not care or let these people under your skin. Be civil but, you must do a cold turkey emotional write off. Understand that your relationship with this person will never be good and they will queer your relationship with anyone you have in common. It is a wide world out there surround yourself with better people. Further when you ask for advice or describe this kind of thing to people who blame you and put your worries off that is a sure sign that those people do the same thing. They can’t comfort you because they themselves are guilty of mistreatment bearing false witness, lying and falsely maligning. Good luck, some people enjoy being jerks.
