Jun 24, 2017 · HCM-ers: Introduce yourself or just say hi in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

I’m ok, thanks. I don’t have HCM (I haven’t had genetic testing done yet) but my 84 y/o father does, he underwent septal myectomy and triple bypass surgeries simultaneously 5 years ago on an emergency basis. My family had never heard about HCM at the time, and that made the entire situation very scary. I wish I knew about this forum, the knowledge and support here are wonderful. My father is doing well now and is still very active. I
follow this group so I can keep abreast of the latest info. From my experience and from what I’ve seen here, if you need to have surgery I would recommend a high volume center like Mayo. All the best to you!

Hi @carjes, you’re certainly in the right place in this forum. I’ve only been here a short time, trying to keep informed since my father had a septal myectomy. We had never even heard of HCM when he had to have his surgery, and so it was a very frightening time for our family. Just this forum alone would have made all the difference because knowledge is power. Stay connected and stay strong, our thoughts are with you!

Hi @vialox, my father had a septal myectomy done 5 years ago at the age of 78. He’s doing fine and living a normal life now. It’s good to hear that you’re in touch with a high-volume center like Mayo and the community here where there’s so much information available. Good luck and good health to you!

Hi there @janicepike, congrats on a successful surgery and for getting past the narcotics! You’ve body has been through a major event and is going to need time to get back up to it’s usual paces, mentally and physically. I saw my father go through the same thing you’re going through and saw that he was out of sorts also for awhile, but he improved quickly once he got back to his usual routine. Maybe taking up a new hobby would help take your mind off things. Go easy on yourself, you deserve it!

Feb 4, 2017 · septal myectomy and mitral valve repair in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

My father’s surgery had to be done quickly, he had a heart attack and tests revealed that he had HCM. The septal myectomy and triple bypass surgery was done at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC about 42 hours after the heart attack, and lasted 9-1/2 hours. He was discharged 8 days later and was very tired the first few days after returning home, but progressed quicker after that and got back to his usual routine within about 3-4 months.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Feb 3, 2017 · septal myectomy and mitral valve repair in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

My father had a septal myectomy and a triple bypass, done at the same time, 5 years ago. His doctors told him the exact same thing that “mcube” said here, that the abnormal thickness of the septal wall was pressing against the mitral valve and preventing it from working properly. Once the surgeon reduced the thickness of the wall, the mitral valve worked fine. I agree with others here and recommend that your husband seek treatment at a hospital that has a high volume of HCM patients. Wishing you and your husband all the best.
