Are you able to get your knee flat on the table? I guess that is part of my problem as well as my hip/pelvis muscle is way too tight too.

Yes. I am 5 months out and just went to a new PT. He made me quit all exercises and has me doing specific ones for the IT band. My knee is no longer flat on the table..I'm 11 degrees off which is putting more of a stretch on the band as well. The surgeon thought my straight knee was good, but in reality, very bad. Keep doing your quad stretches and force that knee down. I'm hoping I see improvement soon. The PT told me he could get the IT calmed down, but it will come back since my knee was off by 11 degrees and my hip was way too tight, so I dangle my leg off the bed and stretch that muscle as well. I'm going 3 times a week and I'm very hopeful. Good luck

I have had the injections as well and tomorrow I go to a new physical therapist with hope of additional type therapy concentrating on the IT band only. My doctor keeps telling me he doesn't think it's the actual knee, but the fact he had to straighten my leg so much, it more than stretched this band. Let me know what the pain doctor has to say and I'll update after my sessions with the new PT. Good luck to you!

Absolutely. I have had injections at the top & bottom of the IT band with no relief. I have been using a foam roller to try to break up the adhesions, with no help. I am 4 months out from my TKR and I'm scheduled to see my surgeon again on Feb 20th. Originally, I was told due to the fact they had to straighten my leg so much, it was no surprise that my IT band was stretched and t will eventually calm down. If I bend my knee to 30 degrees, I get this horrible pain, but it goes away fairly quickly. It wakes me all throughout the night and my sleep has been affected greatly. I am not sure of the answer at this point, but I am looking for some relief soon. My surgeon did tell me he did have a patient with the same issue that lasted 10 months! I'll post my conversation with my surgeon after the 20th. As far as my knee replacement, I think it is doing well except when this IT band is really acting up, my knee swells, but really isn't painful, just feels swollen! Good luck.

Fri, Jan 31 11:20pm · IT band syndrome after knee replacement in Joint Replacements

I had a total knee replacement Sept 30, 2019. During my in-hospital therapy & subsequent therapy, I was told I was doing fantastic. I could bend my knee 30+% and that seemed to be the focus. After about a week, I started with severe pain on the outer side of my knee when I bent it. It felt like it caught on something & just took my breath away. My ortho doc & PTs all thought it would go away, but it’s getting worse. I’ve had cortisone injections in the joint outer side of my knee where the IT band is & at the top of the IT band; both with no relief. Is doing stretches, heat, ice, pain gels & roller treatment all with no relief. I just had a nerve block @ L3,4 & 5, with no relief. My ortho doc thought I might get relief if it was an impingement on my sciatic nerve. No help. I am looking for anyone who has experienced this after your knee replacement & what you have done for relief.
