Wed, Jan 29 1:37pm · Tips on minimising withdrawal symptoms from Effexor (aka Venlafaxine) in Depression & Anxiety

No smells but I have heard that a lot in this thread so believe it's not uncommon. Its shocking how many people with these crazy withdrawals and so many MD's don't know about this.

So I was only ever on 37.5 mg for 2 years, intended only to help hot flashes. Had to go to hormone patch anyway (FYI, best decision ever!). I fainted out cold one night and husband called ambulance. Determined it was vaso vagal syncope (plain old fainting). Checked heart, did monitor to make sure as was having some heart racing episodes too. Did brain MRI to rule that out. All good. Stopped Effexor thinking it may be contributing to these things. Had "boat head" dizziness regularly and brain zaps and pulsitile tinnitus. It's been now increasingly getting worse. The boat head dizziness is terrible and worse with fatigue/work pressures. Head feels "full" too. Driving is bad. Have to lean my head on headrest to feel stable and not get nauseous. This is CRAZY. ENT doctor ran all the inner ear vestibular testing. All good. My husband is more and more convinced it's all stress/fatigue related. So got lowest dose of Xanax. First day with just the one dose daily was the best day in a long time. It SEEMS to be somewhat better, but still having the dizziness maybe not as bad. I do have concerns about Xanax – son was on this when he was 20 and OD'd (ended up ok then sought treatment for marijuana addiction which is what was really making his anxiety worse.) Have appt with neurologist tomorrow to see if there's any issue there. Fyi….I never had anxiety before which is why I keep obsessing about possible medical reasons 🤔

How would you describe the vertigo? When do you experience it? Walking, sitting, driving? I'm wondering if that is what I am having? I'm sure that I need stronger glasses doesn't help lol, but I get it driving on bumpy roads…gotta often rest the back of my head on the head rest. Also get it walking.

It's definitely like you describe I think. Like a swooshing sound of the blood flow to the heart beat. Not loud. The part that makes me crazy is the dizziness and also the throbbing seems to be on the back of my head usually more in the evening. On my way home from work many days I feel like I need to hold my head with my hand or arm to "stabiluze"…..VERY VERY weird.

Feel tippy like I've been on a boat in wavey water all day and got onto dry land but my head is still in the waves. Kind of throbbing (not pain tbough) in my head too.

I've been off of it for over 6 months now but the boat head seems worse lately.

I only was on Effexor for about a year and a half. 37.5. For hot flashes only. Went off 6 months ago after a fainting incident. Had the brain zaps and nausea, etc but the hangover feeling went away. So did anxiety I believe now was caused by the Effexor. I STILL have boat head and throbbing/pulsing, especially late in the day or driving. My head feels "heavy" too. I'm paranoid about other issues but did have brain MRI couple months ago to rule out something really bad after the fainting and heart tested fine. Does anyone have similar ongoing boat head and throbbing six months later???
