Jun 4, 2019 · Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement? in Joint Replacements

Being in the water only relieves discomfort while I'm in the water. I also did a lot of water therapy post op for my first knee as flexion was an issue…again, I could bend the knee much easier in the water, but it made no difference when out of the water. I am seeing a neurologist later this month. I'm taking Gabapentin which may be helping slightly. I find I can't take it twice a day as it makes me too sleepy during the day.

No…I have the same experience as you. I can walk distances but cannot stand still or they burn. They're ok when I sit with feet up. I doubt it's a cyst as it's really not in the knee, but just below to just above and kind of the whole area in general; it doesn't hurt/burn behind the knee. I fear it's nerve issues. I don't want neuropathy!

I had reflexology and acupuncture shortly after my 1st knee replacement because it wasn't rehabbing well…poor flexibility and MUCH pain. I don't know that it helped, as I had pain requiring analgesics for about 4-5 months post op. Both knees bother in certain positions and need a pillow between at nigh, which isn't so uncommon, had tight band feeling for quite a while with my 1st knee; Burning was always somewhat there, but has gotten worse the past 8-9 months. (almost 2 and 3 years post op…I'm now 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 years out). I see a neurologies in a few weeks. I sure wish insurance would cover acupuncture and reflexology.

WOW…that's an interesting find-using the volt meter. I've wondered about doing acupuncture or reflexology to relieve the burning. Wondering if anyone has tried that with any success. My left knee is 3 1/2 years post op and my right knee is 2 years 8 months. Both burn …I feel it all the time except when in a recliner or laying down (I always have a small pillow between my knees because they don't like each other at night). Standing still or just moving around the kitchen is the worst. They are better if I walk distances but I feel every step. I also have tightness/a band feeling if I sit any length of time and start walking. I have an appointment with a neurologist in a 3 1/2 weeks.

I am 3 1/2 years post Left TKA; 2 1/2 years post right TKA. Both are still giving me problems. I had a terrible rehab with my first one. Pain, tight band, took a long time to flex to 100 degrees…with 2 PT's pushing, me pulling and me crying. Used a can for 4 months. The right one rehabbed much better, but I have a burning pain in both…from a couple inches below the knees to an inch or so above the knees. I fear it's neuropathy. I can walk distances much better than stand still or minimal walking, like working in my kitchen. It became worse last fall, so well over 1 and 2 years post op. Some days I feel like I'll be in a wheelchair before long; other days slightly better but I've never been without discomfort. I got a 2nd opinion while in Arizona this past winter; both he and my PA here at home say I likely drew the short straw of the 20% whose knees don't like them. Both said if the burning continues to consider seeing a neurologist, which I plan to do soon. I also have pain in the side of the knee if I sit certain positions. Driving with foot on the gas pedal is very uncomfortable when I can't use cruise control. I really didn't have the option of not doing the surgeries….arthritis doesn't get better and I was bone-on-bone and resorting to a cane.

I had my first knee replacement November 2016; Rehab was a trip to hell. It didn't help that I live alone. The other knee was done 10 months later (October 2017 and had a much easier rehab. However, both knees have a burning sensation from 2-3 inches below the knee to just above the knee. It's not in the knee cap area but more to the sides. It wasn't bad until this past fall, so almost 2 years after 2nd replacement. I can walk better than I can stand in one place, so if I'm standing in one place or barely moving around, I have to sit down every 10-15 minutes at best. I fear neuropathy, but don't understand why it wold start that long after surgery. I still have pinching pain especially in the latest knee…certain positions make it feel like a vice grip is around the knee cap. Anyone have any answer to this?
